If you can't do it yourself it would probably be cheaper just to sell yours and buy a 4x4 3rd gen. Or are you really partial to your second gen?

I think 2nd gens are sooo much nicer looking than 3rd gens. And I really like having a tailgate. But I can't to the swap myself either. So...I'm saving for a 3rd gen and leave it at that.

A shop quote me $4,000 for the 3.4 swap, if I can get the email from him I'll PM you for it. His shop is in CA, near S.F. area I believe. Found him in craigslist.

That's gotta be labor only...you have to supply the engine. Let us know

hmm, maybe you also are right, if i could sell my runner, make a quick 3-4 k then take the 4-6k i would have to save up for engine, then probably hit 10k and get the 3rd gen, but a new engine... hmmmmmmm more power, another 300,000 lol (hopes and dreams) then i could burnout no questions asked.

are you more prone to problems when you swap engines like that? anyone done this a long time ago?

Here's a link that might help you do the swap/estimate for it.
Personally I'd love to have the 3.4 in my 88' 1st gen
with th 7th injector and the supercharger!

my truck is in excellent shape except for a few minor things i neglect lol. so i might save up for the new engine. we will have to see, maybe run this one till its dead or fix up all the things like headlights, speakers, brakes, lift, and then add that to the end of the list.

IMHO there are "hack" installs and there are "OEM-ish" installs. The latter usually costs more.

Engine swaps are usually a DIY deal or a "Jay Leno" deal.

Call ORS to get a ball park figure on a turn key "OEM-ish" install soup to nuts (i.e. drop off a turkc and they do the rest). My guess is to be sure you are sitting down when you hear the price.

Also - YOU WILL NEVER RECOUP THE "INVESTMENT".
You will NEVER be able to sell the truck for what it cost you to do the swap.
Do it becuase it makes you happy - not because you can sell it later.
Usually swaps are worth LESS than an unmolsted vehicle - even an OEM-ish swap.

Swap are like high end kitchen remodels. They involve HUNDREDS of "customizing" questions as the swap progresses. The next buyer may or may not be impressed with your choices. A future buyer will llieky have VERY differnt choices and thus may buys a swap for "parts" or as a starting point for a redo.

oh no definately, im not interested in selling ive got my truck in great shape. thats why i wanna get a new engine when this one has seen its day (which wont be in too long couple years max)

even though it is worth less, is it worth it to do in the long run is what im asking.
will the truck do better, or is it like one of those things that once you tamper that much with an engine, its not going to be half as reliable as it was..

do you get what im saying i know im confusing.

I did my own swap in August. Rough estimate for engine, exhaust system, miscellaneous parts, and whatever extra mods/tools/fluid and stuff I needed and it came out to around $3300. Now, figure that I did most of the work myself, with some help from my brother and his neighbor (and some from my kids), it took me around 9 days to do it all (I lost a day or so when I screwed up the design of my crossover pipe and had to pull the engine and have it re-done).

Now that I've done one, I think I could shorten the time frame down to about 5-6 days, given what I know now. If you were to have a shop do it, like you've mentioned, I doubt that your labor for a good job would be less than another $3000-4000 on top of what I've just mentioned. Truthfully, if you can't do it yourself, it isn't economically feasible to have someone else do for you. You really would be better off dropping the cash on something that has the 3.4 in it already. I love my truck so I was willing to sacrifice my time to do it. It was a great learning process, frustrating as hell at times, and rewarding in the end.

To have someone else do it, though...no...I can't recommend it.

cant recommend having someone else do your swap either its just to much i spent 2500-3000 doing mine and still wish i would have just bought a new truck.

Dont get me wrong i love the swap and i love my truck. its just with a new kid in the house i wish i would have bought a new full-size.
