GM L67 into a 92 4X4
I have a 92 Yota p/u with a TIRED 3.0 and 5 speed. It is a 4X4 X-Cab.
The GM L67 is an OBDII based 3800 cc supercharged engine. Stock it makes 240 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque. This engine should be in the 275 and 325 range, as it has had a bit of work done to it. I am an accomplished fabricator with access to a full machine shop, so I can make it work, but have never done a swap of this nature and could use some guidance. Possible issues that I already have a solution for... I have checked on a clutch with a toy hub and 10.5" GM disk, that is not an issue. Motor mounts are not an issue, as I said, I am a fabricator. Have a complete L67 wiring harness and computer, along with the ability to custom tune the computer for the L67. Will have to fab a 180* 4" horseshoe to bolt the throttlebody onto the blower, as the blower is for a FWD car, and the inlet is at the rear. Already have an electric fan on the truck, and the GM comp will control it. Now for the problems that I need an answer for... Although the 3800 SII GM engines are a 90* V6 they have the 60* V6 bellhousing pattern which makes them incompatible with the 4.3 V6 bellhousings on the market. I think I can make a bellhousing (Machined and fabricated steel, not cast aluminum or formed steel.) , but am wondering if anyone else on here has ever done it and if they have any tips. Gauges, are the Toy gauges run by the ecm or directly off of the sending units? IE Tach, speedo, oil press, temp. Fuel and voltage are direct read gauges, so I am not concerned with them. If you have any feedback, suggestions, see any potential problems that I am not seeing, etc, LMK!!! Thanks in advance, Ben H. |

I did an L36 on a R150 Toy 5sp, a few months ago, and could not be happier with the results. Hey Nash,
I'm doing an L67 right now, if You use an R154 5sp. from a Supra, You should'nt need the Novak adapter ($300 savings) if You can make a 3/16" sandwich plate, to fit between, the GM 2.8 bell house/large Aisin front trans case bolt pattern. Same pattern on all R series manual trans. The R154 inputshaft is about 29mm longer than the R150, it also has a .73, 5th gear, so You can keep Your existing diff gears, and end up with about 2000 rpm cruise. I also would not do any mods to the stock motor, untill You have it running exactly correct......and B.T.W. the official L67 hp rating, is very conservative, it's closer to 300hp @crank, stock... I know first hand. You will be able to Smoke...all the TRD 5.7's You want, S/C 3.4's will be boring, and No One will ever expect You to come up from behind. You will also need a rear locked diff. All this, and still get between 24-30 mpg, with 32" tires.. if You can lay off it. Pic's of intake tube? Thanks, Kiwi |

Don't have the intake tube built yet.... I am also considering getting a Holden Gen IV M90 housing that they used on the L67 powered Commodores. You can pick up a housing for around $250 or so if you look in the right places. The Gen IV had a 75-80* bend in the inlet side from the factory to clear the firewall. The engine I have for the truck is in my wife's car right now, but we will be buying her another ride in the next couple of months as long as I can get another travel job or two by then. (I am a traveling iron worker.) It already has a ported M90, 3.4" pulley, 72mm throttle body, LT1 MAF, and a few other goodies.
I will probably end up making an adaptor myself instead of buying the Novak. I did not even think about a Camaro B-Housing working.... Thank God for the interweb!!! |
