Engine swap/ rebuild nightmare. Help...
Ok I bought my first toyota 4runner. This is where the nightmare starts. I have put so much money into this thing I can't stop for fear of loosing it all.
I started off by replacing tires, tie rods, calipers, rotors, pitman arm, drive shaft, battery, cat and exhaust pipe and alternator and a 60.00 modulator valve to pass emmissions. Then at the inspection station when runing the engine the heads blew. coolant everywhere. I sent the heads out to have rebuilt and reinstalled. Ran for about 500 miles then on the innerstate at 65mph it died and coolant was everywhere. I thought the head gasket went again however when I finally got it home pulled engine, started taking apart I found the timing belt broke and a small hose broke. OK I had the engine apart so I decided to rebuild the whole engine. My first thought was to do an engine swap however in Harris county I would not be able to get it inspected because of rules. I didn't have time to work on engine but a friend of mine said he would do it for a laptop computer. He started and then he changed jobs and didn't want to finish. So I got my motor back in pieces. He broke several parts taking apart. I spent Sunday at the junk yard getting all the parts I needed. I am ready to finish putting this thing together. ON to my questions. I sent the block out, cyl 20 over and had crank checked and polished. I have installed new, main berings, pistons and had the heads serviced. I have engine back together however since I didnt take apart I have a couple of brackets that I have no clue where they go. Also the new gasket kit came with 2 thick cork style oil pan gaskets. Do I put them in without sealant? |

Where do these part belong on the engine?
I talked to Toyo mechanic he said not to use gaskets on oil pan, just 1/8in bead of silicone. If I can figure out how to insert a pic can some one tell me where these 2 brackets go and the o-rings that were in the kit go?

Welcome to Yotatech.
You should have checked here before you bought that 2nd Gen with a 3.0 I'd suggest purchasing a FSM, fixing your truck and then driving over to your "friend's" house and kicking his arse. Good Luck. ![]()

The two gaskets are for the oil pan and the windage tray that is sandwiched between the oil pan and the block. I used the FIPG and chucked the two gaskets into the trash can. I used a 1/4 or so bead of sealant on both the windage tray and the oil pan surface. If you do decide to use the gaskets, don't apply sealant to them.

DONTTTTTT USE THE OILPAN GASKETS, you'll find that the oilpan bolts will all be too short, use a good sealant and it will not leak. i had to pull my gasket off and seal her up and throw away the gaskets, what a pita...
