can i swap my 3.0 for a 22r?

I bought my 1989 Toyota pickup sr5 about a year ago. LOVE IT! but the engine is acting up. It leaks oil at the valve cover area and maybe other areas. It needs work to the starter/ignition system as it wont start sometimes, its as if there is no power going to the solenoid? So the short and curlies of it is i'm going to have to yank the engine out to change all the seals and fix up the starter. Maybe rebuild the whole engine. I have heard great things about the 22r and was wondering if rather then dumping money into the 3.0 (AKA Turd) if it is easier to just swap with a 22r? what do you guys think?
Thanks,
Josh.

Swapping a 3.4 will take far less fab work than going to a 22RE. I've been averaging 22-24 mpg, running 33" tires on my 3.4 swap, so long as I keep my foot out of the throttle...but man, the thing is so damn fun to drive when you do punch it. No normal 22RE will give you as much fun.
