350 ?'s
the 22re i have is "Junk" so i would like to get a sbc350 for it! so i priced it and i can get an adapter from downey for around $417, i could make my own motor mounts, and get a 350 for around $250!... what else do i need? will the adapter kit have everything ill need? i just want to make the swap as easy as possible! oh and ill make my own exhaust!

its never as easy as it sounds... you'll find that out soon enough. you'll want to regear your axles, or that 350 will disintegrate them. and honestly, id put a stronger transmission in, i dont think a stock toy transmission will stand up to a 350 for long, especially if you've got a lead foot. it will also suck gas like crazy, i had a chevy with a 350, and that thing drank gas. on the freeway it got about 12mpg, and in the city it got about 8mpg. then again the truck was a 66 C10, and the engine was from a 71 camaro, but still. let me know how this goes, im thinking of doing a 350 swap sometime

Lots of bad information is thrown around about V8 swaps. Personally, I've helped do 3 swaps myself, 2 302 5.0's, and a Tundra 4.7 into a 92 Yoter. While it's not a direct bolt-in job...it's not rocket science, either. Sorry for all the long post here but some points are needed to be made.
-The biggest mistake that a lot of people make is trying to use Toyo trannies and rear ends with these motors. Toyota makes tough as nails parts...but they're NOT built to handle the HP and TQ that a V8 gives. Some people don't like it since it's not Toyota parts, but I would rather have something in that can handle the abuse. But, if you're a Yoter freak and just have to have Toyota parts...find yourself a R-151F, and don't go taking off like you're in the NHRA National Championship or some ...and it might last. The 8.8" rear end is around the same strength as a D44....so you're in better shape there, but then again...better safe, then sorry. -Cooling is a bitch. But can be done while retaining the AC. Really, it depends on the motor you use. I will talk more about this if I'm asked. -Frame reinforcement. Demello makes some...you can box the rear. Not completely necessary...but...well I won't say it again. -You will more than likely need yourself some custom headers and exhaust. Also, try to get a COMPLETE motor. Harness, computer...everything. Another thing that people try to do is try to use Toyota wiring, and Toyota this and that with a donor engine...that's all fine and dandy but you have to buy adapters for everything and it just ends up being a pain in the ass to deal with. --If you can wait...either at the end of May or June I'm SAS'ing and swapping a stroker motor into my '00 Taco. The exact motor choice is still yet undecided ...but I'm leaning towards a LS2 Iron block 408...should be putting over 500 RWHP, ~530 TQ. I may also go with an aluminum or iron block 418 or 427...it just all depends.

Well, it just all depends on how you look at it. A lot of people think I've done jumped off the looney bin a time or two when I mention the idea...but 2 out of 3 times, that's because they think I'm trying to swap a Big Block in. Which is the time where I think they've jumped off the looney bin themselves.

I'm getting ready to start my 350 swap tomorrow. I finally got all my parts.
A couple things you have to figure out first. Do you want to keep the toy trans and transfer, or chevy stuff? Keeping the toy stuff will let you keep your stock driveline (if you work it right) Youll have a better gear ratio too, since most chevy trans/transfer have a higher gear reduction. If you want 5 speed, use a R150 V6 trans. You'll have to get a new pressure plate and custom clutch plate, about $300 for those. Bellhousing adapter can be had for $350 (Advance Adapters from www.rockbuggysupply.com) |

i had an 86 standard cab with a mild built 350 and it was so much fun, i used a turbo 350/205 combo it worked great i used a short water pump and a 2core cross flow radiator, never over heated. the gearing was ok but i had 33" tires. the toyota running gear will not just explode. it holds up well. dont get me wrong i broke like 3 rear 4:10 3rds. but i was abusing them bad!2nd gear huge power brakes on dry pavement over and over.

Been there, done it. Easy swap with the adaptor kit (motor mounts, tranny x-member, etc...). I used a pusher electric fan out front to help with pulley clearance and to keep the distributor out of the firewall. Ran a Toy tranny with one for years with 42's and stock diffs. No problems but I didn't do burnouts or hardcore off-roading, just deep muddy pits in the swamp. My best decision was to keep the sbc simple...mild RV cam, 600cfm, longtube headers....maybe only about 250hp. If you go with most stock sbc's, you'll probably only push 175-225hp anyhow.

They over price their crap, have crap customer service and at least the parts of theirs that I had were crap quality too. You advertise for them like you work there or something.
