That's a tow rope/winch extension NOT a recovery strap!
Recovery straps are designed to stretch to minimize the impact load on the vehicles, thereby preventing damage. I have ARB, ProComp, and no-name recovery straps, they all seem pretty equivalent to me ...

Recovery straps, unless you are incredibly diligent, take serious abuse and eventually have to be replaced.
Buy two of these, and just replace them on a regular basis (ie, whenever they start to fray) Last edited by Crawdad; 04-23-2008 at 06:32 AM. |

Ight, cool guys, thanx for all the great info and suggestions. I guess I did post in the wrong section; got moved, my bad. I wish Harbor Freight had a little thicker one; I was hoping for at least a 3 inch wide strap, but I guess they should serve their purpose well. Good prices too. Now I just have to decide 20 or 30 ft, lol.

A 2" x 20' is a good start. If you go too big, you won't get the benefit of the stretch.
Be sure to pick up some shackles and make sure you have a way to hook the strap up in the front and the rear of the vehicle.

I just ordered a 2" by 30' Super Strap. I won't get to see it for another couple of months, but after having to fight with hooking up normal recovery straps and getting them loose again over hear in the desert on Humvees, the Super Strap looked ideal. When it comes to stuff like that, I don't want to skimp.

i use a 1.5" nylon double braid rope about 25 feet long... you can tug on it as hard as you want but it feels like you're pulling with a bunjie cord

I have a smittybuilt 3"x30', don't spend to much on your strap, but don't skimp too much neither. I need to replace mine now becuase I helped a family get unstuck and pulled their broken down zuki so they could get cell reception. The road played hell on my strap.
Well most people seem are overly grateful for a helping hand but not so much to replace the equipment that gets worn past servicibility doing lending that hand. Oh, well next time they can sit there and we'll call some one for them with long/lat coordinates

Someone mentioned buying a strap with the loops instead of the hooks.
Why is that??? You would think hooks would be better since most domestic sedans and such would have something for a hook rather than a loop... Anyone care to explain? |

if the strap breaks you can have a hook flying at you, or if it slips off.
there was a kid last year that got hit in the knee with a hhook and broke his knee. as far as tow straps i got one from napa for $30 i think been used a few occasions

I got a 30 ft long, 3 inch thick 25,000 lb one from Princess Auto (Canadian equivalent to Harbor Freight) for 26 bucks on sale this week. I've already pulled 6 people out with it and it's holding up great.
The best thing about it is if it breaks, I just bring it back and they'll give me a new one for free.
