You want one with the OEM truss on it like an 84 or 85 4Runner/Pickup.

this is actualy a good idea as you can easily add a truss to the top bigger and stonger

No i dont know of anyone whos bent one down could it happen? the early axles still have a truss dont they? its just not all the way to the outside of the perch so i guess ground clearence in a small spot would be robbed with a newer one and also like stated above its gonna cost more for the newer. as for bending knuckles just buy the creeper gussets from trail-gear or make your own Marlin also sells some but i like the trail-gear design sorry marlin. they are a great upgrade aspecialy for like $35 and if you want to buy a upper gusset they are also pretty cheap. i just made my own

I prefer the '81-'83 models with the partial truss. The full truss on the later years makes u-bolt flips more complicated because of the squarish cross-section of the axle. The earlier ones still have a truss out to the spring but the axle tube is round. Extra trussing is easily done on your own.

I found the way you can bend an axle down and it makes plenty of sense. if you bottom out your suspension it puts a huge load on the axle downwards thus making it vital you have good bumpstops even with them though you can bend an axle down. as for my question about the truss, on all the earlier than 81 dont have a truss.
Toy283 is right about the flip kits but even with the truss its not to hard to make it work

Save for the diamonds if you don't already have a solid axle. I will be getting the diamonds as soon as I get some other things taken care of...gears, lockers, engine rebuild...then DIAMONDS all the way!

anyone have pics of what these different styles of factory trusses look like. What other key features distinguish an '81-'83 from an '84-'85 ?
