Twistedyota's 87 SAS

this is going to be a lil slowdo to the lack of money but here is this:

Will keep updating cost
Total Cost:
Housing 75.00
axle parts 0.00
Kunckle Rebuild kit 91.81
Gas to get parts 26.00
Axle Outer Snap Ring w/2nd Day Shipping 13.88
High steer minus 1 TRE w/Shipping 133.00
Front hanger & hybrid marlin/stock springs 100.00
Tie rod end and high ster arms w/ shipping 165.67
-------------------------------
Total(So Far) 605.36
this is what i did last week(last wensday)

Tear Down

i had to cut the rim to get to the lug nuts:

the plasma cut through it like butter

a look of the axle:

taking the hub apart:
-took the dial, and part of the spring assymbly off. in this pic the gear on the end of the spring assy. is still in the hub

the dial and spring assy.:

here im pointing at the cailper bolts(just to remind me which ones they are):

another picture showing both this time

then i removed the
-inner hub gear
-snap ring
-hub
-lock nut
-lock washer
-nut
-outer bearing
-inner bearing
-and rotor
here is a pic after all tht:

will try to take a picture step by step when doing the other side

my parts piling up:

rotor and hub:

brake caliper:

Removed 8 bolts then a ring came off(spindle ring mybe?) and my backing plate came off also:

not shown the spindle came off after the backing plate

new box of parts:

backing plate:

you can see where i accidently hit it with the plasma

removed the ball sweeper:

you can see it haning on the axle housing

pile getting bigger:

my ripped gasket and ball sweeper/wiper:

my upper trunnion bearing:

the other one was still good

my greasy ball and birfeild:

my knuckle off:

my axle shaft wouldnt come out so we decide to start straightening it:

we applied pressure then heated it up and let it cool and repeated
and yes i made sure the flat spots on the birf were in the right spot before we decide to bend it

here is my uncle heating it up:

after letting it cool the first time:

i then had to reposition the jack to try to bend it some downwards.

and no we arnt stupid it was bent up and backwards, so we had to bend it forward and then downwards

after bending it the second time. it was still bent some. and my axle shaft still would not come out. after spending a while looking it over and think we came to the conclusion tht the part of the housing where the third bolts to is slightlyu bent also.

so tht means this housing is junk.

got my axle shaft out out:

with the help of the ban saw and the plasma

the axle out:

took it apart and found out tht the shaft is not bent. but we busted a c-clip seperating it from the birf.

will have more when i get some time.

i have to disassemble the drive side. order some parts and put it all together in my new 83 housing tht i just picked up yesterday.

yeah your going to bust that C-clip everytime you take a birf apart or allmost, if you want an easier solution try searching "martack" on pirate, then you wont have to use the C clip anymore...and i wish my knuckles still had grease in them...mine looked like i found it at the bottom of a pond...

got a little bit more done today

here is the driver side frome the beggining:

i got to say i hate these rims. they are so hard to get to the lugnut exspecially when their is dirt in the holes. i had to use a screw driver to get the dirt out and then a then walled socket to get the lugnuts off.

wheel off:

tried to remove the brake line to the caliper and it started to strip:

it then stripped some more after trying something else(no pic)

the grabed the vise grips:

and it came off

next are the 2 caliper bolts:

removed the bottom one(no pic)
then tried removing the top one, it will spin all day but wont come out, this is as far as it comes out:

its hard to see but it almost lloks like it pulled the threads out of the knuckle and are stuck on the bolt not allowing it to go through the cliper:

so my plan is to cut the head of the bolt off and see how bad things look. but i didnt have a grinder today

so i decided to remove the j arm to be able to work with the bolt better tomarrow:
here is how it set:

removed all the nuts:

then removed all the washers:

a bit of advise for any1 tearing an axle apart. when tearing down dont forget to clean dirt, mudd and grime in the space between the cone washers and the sterring arm:

cleaning it out with a screwdriver:

i then taped the arm with a hammer to pop the cone washers loose:

then once again took a small screw driver to seperate the cone to make for an easier removal:

all the cones removed:

i was then having a hard time getting my arm off, i finally got it off though:

and this is why i was having a hard time:

the trunnion bearing came apart.

so then i decided to tear apart the axle as far as i can until i can get the caliper off.

manual hub dial, spring and gear off:

one of it with out the dial:

taking the nuts off for the hub housing:

had to hit the side of the housing to get the cone washers to pop free:

u can see the cone washer has popped out some:

i use a small flat head screwdriver to widen the cones to remove them:

all the cones removed:

removint the snap ring tht holds the housing on;

snap ring removed:

housing removed:

cleaned the grease out:

straightend the tabs on the lock washer:

one tab straighted:

both of my tabs straightened:

loosening my luck nut by postioning a screwdriver on a corner and tapping it with a hammer:

unscrewing the locknut:

the lock nut unscrewed:

how the axle looks:

removed the lock washer:

how the axle looks:

used the same process to remove the inner axle nut:

so a couple of things.
#1
i need trunnion bearings. what is a good cheap place to get them.
i dont need them to last for ever but a year would be extremely nice. i dont plan to wheel this hard right now. once i get the funds to start wheeling this hard i will buy new bearings.
#2
i lost a cone washer for my hube assy. i hit the side with the hammer and it shot across the dirt/gravel lot to who knows where. does any one have a spare or know a good place. id go to pick-n-pull but i was their last week and no solid axles.
#3
my rotors are pretty rusted, so i want to replace them. now should i just get new SA rotors tht are not vented. or can i get a vented rotor to work.
i havent spent a lot of time looking up tht but the searches i have done all talk about using fj rotors with an ifs hub to get rid of the need for wheel spacers. im fine with running spacers for now. so what are my options?

got some more done today

cut the head off tht caliper bolt i was having problems with(no pic)

i then took the 4 bolts tht hold the caliper together out to sploit it in 2 to remove(no pics)

here is the bolt:

two things i can come up with
1 it was heli-coiled and the coil stuck to the bolt
2 it was ripped out when it got in the accident

the knuckle:

outter bearing removed:

theading the lock nut back on:

inner bearing off the rotor:

lock nut removed:

inner bearing removed:

bearing seal removed:

removing spindle/backing plate bolts:

glove is on the shaft to keep me from getting greasy

all the bolts removed:

no clu what this is called, so hold down plate? removed:

with the plate gone:

backing plate removed:

spindle removed:

with everything removed:

the backing ring? or rock ring?:

all the bolts off one half:

the other half:

with out the ring:

the gasket removed:

with out the gasket:

wiper removed:

with out the wiper:

steel plate removed:

lower trunnion bearing cap:

nuts removed:

washers removed:

taped the side of the cap to loosen it:

pulled the cap up and the bearing came with, but allowed the knuckle to come off:

how it sat then:

sprayed it down with some brake clean to get rid of some of the grease:

removing the axle:

now on to the 3rd, how it sat:

all the nuts and washers removed:

yanked it out:

how it looked then:

then decided to cut the housing up:

i love the plasma cutter it makes life so easy.

i decided to cut it up because i figured some one might need the knuckle balls or the drain plug or filler plug.

Clean up

i cleaned the pass. knucle the other day but didnt take pictures

so here is the driver knuckle before cleaning:

and after cleaning:

i still have a couple of spots to get.
but as you can see, i got the bearing to come off the cap and then cleaned it up to.

this is some of what came off:

sure is, makes life easier for trail repairs...also if you need trunion bearings the only place to get em..(that i kno of) is the toy dealer and they have to order it...just buy a knuckle rebuild kit from wabfab here and youll be set with new trunions knuckle whipers seals and felts, all the axle seals, annnd all the seals for the lockout hub...only thing needed is some wheel bearings if you need em..best 50 bucks i spent..also i bealive u can get cone washers from him too..

didnt get much done due to the random rainstorm yesterday and the most of today
but here is what i got done

ran a pipe thread in the housing to make it an 1/8 pipe thread:

i then took and wire brushed the housing

then sprayed it down with brake clean

then covered the diff hole and the breather:

i then taped the balls off to prevent over spray

then painted it black

then i removed the lower to studs because my drain plug will never come out, it has been scrapped a lot

then removed the cardboard and put a bead of silicone around the housing for the diff

then installed the diff, here you can see the drain and the bolts:

took a picture of as far as i got but it is blurred so i will take one tomarrow.

finally decided i am going to buy a knuckle rebuild set, but i dont know who im going to go with yet, still comparing prices to find the cheapest.

[B][SIZE="3"]Just put in my order for my knuckle rebuild set...cost me $91.81

pretty good pricing on it. i spent some time looking around and i only found 1 place i think tht was cheaper and it was either Fronteir 4x4 or Davez Offraod, but i havent heard of them alot and wanted to go with a company tht i know is good.

so i should have the parts here sometime in the middle of the week.
then will have my axle all together hopefully.

got a little bit more done, will edit and post pics later.

now im on a stand still till i get my bearing set, and some bolts for my front springs.

so here are the pictures from the other day

the hub all cleaned up:

the caliper all cleaned up:

both painted:

i thought i had a pictue of where i got my hangers from but cant find it, i removed some c-shaped metal from an old cherry picker frame

here they are cut off the square tubing:

here they are grinded smooth:

i then drilled holes for the spring bolt. will post pictures of tht later.

now like stated earlier all i am waiting for is some spring bolts and my kuckle rebuild kit, then i can finish the axle and start building my front hanger.

still pushing to get it done before the 10th
