Starting the process of the SAS...

well boys and girls the wheels are in motion im going to check out this 85 front axle tomorrow the guy wants 350 but im offering him 250 cash but if that doesn't bite im goin down and pickin up a 81' front axle for 200 on friday. Just wanted to get this thread goin cuz ill be goin through the whole process of rebuilding the axle and doing the SAS and getting all the parts. wish me luck as i venture into the darkside haha pics will be up on friday of the axle and within the next weeks ill regear it from 4.10 to 4.88. I plan to do the trail gear kit and maintain the 33's for now since i just bought them then when they wear out get the lift for the 35's.

ok this guy is selling an 85 front axle for 350 but its been on the market for 2 weeks so if show him 260 cash i think he'll bite but isn't 350 way too overpriced for a stock front axle. Im goin down on friday to see an 81 front axle but i heard the 85's are better gusseted so it worth the extra money??

If you plan on adding a front locker you will need the longs, otherwise with 33's you should be fine with the stock units for the time being. If you can afford it I would do it right the first time and get the longs and hub gears, along with a full rebuild.

yeah thats a good idea ill look into it but i mean its goin to be the same lift except coils that UKmeyers did with accomadates 35's and 37's so i misewell do the longs now that way when i where out the 33's and go up to 35's ill have that piece of mind. 645 dollars is a lot i think im gonna do it once i get ready for 35's cuz im running on a budget. The stock birfields can't be that weak can they??

There are members here who've busted them with 33's and a locker. Open, you'll probably be okay.

Don't know how much i believe it, but some hold that the stock birfs are actually weaker than the CV's on IFS axles. From what i've seen, they are roughly the same strength.

Eliminator Kits are junk man.. You will break them as they neck down to fit through the factory axle seal. Just buy the 30 spline longs and Hub gears from the go. It's nice knowing that you will never have to go back in there unless you break a Ring and Pinion.

He just came and helped me tear my front axle down and install the HP 5.29/ARB and 30 spliners so at least he knows what he's doing now. I would suggest since the budget is so slim keep the 33s and open diff front this year, then next year try to save up for the upgrades. Nothing wrong with doing it in steps when on a tight budget. I've had my SAS for 4 years and just now but ANY gears or shafts in it and I'm still a cool guy right ? I have a good excuse though b/c the truck was immobile for 3.5 of those 4 years so there was no motivation to spend the $$$ till now.

I ran 35s and no front locker for several years on stock birfields. Never had any problems. Wait until you get a front locker, then put Longfields in.

The most important part of a stock Toy axle housing to be trussed is the outter balls, where they connect to the housing. Trail Gear has a good truss for this.

BTW - Even the more affordable, 27 spline Longfields are very strong.

Hit it harder ! Don't be too concerned with dinging the housing. You won't hurt it if you hit it in the right place. That rubber hammer is a little weanie excuse for a hammer. Get a bigger one. If it still isn't coming off get a brass punch and a sledge and you can really wail on it.

you could try some of that rusted/corroded bolt loosening stuff, the name escapes me but someone else will remember. If I was at the auto parts store I'd know it when i saw it !
