SAS conversion help on axle

So lately I’ve been think of doing the SAS conversion on my 92 4x4 v6 3.0. Which axel should I be looking for in the junk yard? One off a current straight axel 4x4 pickup or should I look into something like a Land Cruiser? Also about about gear will i have to have out the diffs front and back axels to match up as a pair?

1979-1985 TRUCK front axle is what you want, but if you have to ask then I'm concerned that this swap may be a little over your head. Have you thought about tackling other thinks like transfer case gears and a rea rlocker? I'd do that first and wait to blow up your IFS.

Any 79-85 front axle. Do yourself a favor and search.

EDIT: This is a pretty basic knowledge oldgold3vze is right...

Spend some time learning, and come back when you are learned.

Also, spend some time searching the forums here. This info has been available since this forum was created.

In fact, we have a subforum specifically dedicated to SAS: http://www.yotatech.com/f152/

i've done a little research and all the SAS swaps i've seen online so far has not said anything about gearing in the front diff. I just wanted to know since my truck is already 4x4 and is already paired up with the stock setup, would think that going with the solid axle i would need to match the front diff, with the stock diff in the back.

Maybe it's the wrong question to ask.

I've also been looking into
Sky's kit and Wab's kit as well.

No it wasnt the wrong question to ask, But most people do an sas to fit 35's or larger, and you cant really run 35's without NEW (or maybe used) matched gear sets front and rear, your stock 4.56's arent going to turn those well, if at all..
Whatever the case you need lower gears (numerically higher), So it really shouldnt matter what gear set comes in a toy axle.

There are a few people running 33's afterward.

Also.. You can push 35's with 4.56's. It won't be fun, your clutch and mpgs will hate you but you can get by with it.

Go onto Trail-gear.com and marlincrawler.com. Read their installation instructions. I did that a few times before i tackled my project. helped a bit.

Yes any 79-85' axle from a pickup or 4runner will work. The later ones are perfered more since it has more factory bracing under it.

axle prices range from free (if your lucky) to 300 or so.. I paid $300 for mine. Im sure there is people that have paid more, and people who have paid less. just depends on the deal you can find.

Ideally you want an 84-85 because they had a better truss set up. If you do it right it won't matter though because your going to want to add truss's to it anyways. Your also going to want to plate the steering stops. The stock ones are junk. There's a lot more to this project than just slapping an axle out of older Toy under your truck. Here's a list of things off the top of my head that I've seen cause Toys to sit in garages for years unfinished because they didn't realize what they had gotten into.

First prepping the axle.. full rebuild, truss, armor, plated steering stops.
Might as well stick some longfields in there while rebuilding or else you'll get really good at replacing birfs
Even 33's look dinky on a SASed rig.. most guys run 35's
If your gonna run 35's your gonna need to regear
If your gonna regear you might as well lock it while it's apart
Oh crap the stock push pull won't work.. Gotta get a hysteer kit
Shoot what springs to go with since I need 4 new leaf springs
Oh man now the front is higher than the rear.. gotta rebuild the rear too
What springs in the rear
Shocks are now to short.. gotta buy new shocks all around
Now it flexes too much in the front.. need a long spline custom shaft

Of course you can always do all this on the cheap... hack it together and then spend all your time broke clogging up the trail. Do your homework.. a SAS is a huge expensive project. An IFS rig on 33's with some decent gears and locked up will AMAZE you at where it'll go when driven properly.

UKMyers hit the nail on the head, as you can see I did just about everything he said. Like said ealier, if you are gonna do it, do it right the first time and enjoy your rig. You can always check out my thread below.

Good luck with this.

I know a lot of people mention gears, but I push my 36 tsl's w/ the stock 4.10 gearing. Of course, its not a daily driver and its dual cased, but does ok here in NC driving to the trails. I will eventually go to 5.29's, but for now, just welded the spiders and waited for the expense of gears and lockers.
