little torn about full widths

I've got an 87 runner I've been accumulating parts for. Up till recently the plan was to use my 85 front axle with a TG kit or something. I'm now considering full width for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost is 16.5 rims, I can get military 37s with rims all day for less than 50 bucks a tire. Spending money on my rig is almost a fight to the death with my wife so I gotta think ahead about keeping costs low.

Second isn't really one or another but I don't think I'm going to use a prefab kit either way (which eleminates the need to keep the toy front). I'm thinking that cutting the rad support and replacing it with a stout crossmember that can can be used as a spring hanger will keep my COG down and I'm flirting with the idea of running 3/4 elip for the front end and building a little goofy front anti wrap bar. Figure I'd get better than the 10" of travel most people report with the kits.

So I'm thinking an old broke down chevy could run me as little as a few hundred bucks for some 1tons and then I could run hummer wheels and i'd be doing the suspension from scratch anyways. The only questions left unanswered would be steering and drive lines. I figure adapters may work for the Drive lines and steering, who knows i'd just piece it together when the truck is sitting in front of me.

I guess this would all be mute if I could find an affordable source for meats in a 15" rim.

Well you can recenter hummer rims, or get 6lug 16.5 rims. You can get drive line adapters for them so you can run toy dshafts.

Nothing wrong with wanting to run full widths. dana 60 and a 14bolt would be a good combo.

6 lug 16.5 don't exsist anymore, it would solve alot if they did. Neither do the old spacers that would convert 6 to 8 lug

Edit: Someone prove me wrong

If you can get a 1ton front axle for a few hundred do it!!!

As for steering do a search.. There are several companies that make kits for those axles.

Dont expect this to be the less expensive route.

I'll investigate the steering options, as far as axles craigslist is full of beat down fords with 44s and 9s most can be had for like 500 bucks and if you can find one with a 460 or 400 you can get almost that much back out of it.

I'm gonna look into recentering :shrug

60 14 is and unbeatable combo. steering; axle side do everything full width from offroaddesign.com and you will have no problems, frame side just use your favorite yota offroad supplyer, all you'll have to make is a custom draglink
