Front Axle - Should I buy?

Here is a pic of an '85 front axle this guy wants for $300 with NO diff. Should I buy? This a good deal? Besides the diff it is complete...

I am pretty sure I will buy it, just wanted some second opinions. It is the '85 and it is close to home, so easy pickup...

Pass. That is alot with no gears or chunk. You can get one cheaper. Heck i got a complete assembly for $75 but i was in the right palce at the right time. That is too much for a front axle.

Ya he was wanting $380 with the stock 4.10 open diff... what should I try to haggle him down to? I was thinking these were more around the $200 range, but haven't seen any lately. Or they sell fast, which is why I'm thinking I should jump on it. But ya it's kinda pricey imo.

but $200 with or without a diff? I have one ready to swap in with gears/locker, but is it worth $200 still w/o diff?

I'd say $200 with no differential isn't to bad. It's defiantly not a great deal.

I've gotten complete axles for $200 but they're getting harder to find on my side of the world.

In Cali you should have no problem finding a better deal. Take for instance trail gears new rock assault axle. I dont much like the idea, looks or anything about it but its built and sells for $400 brand new. a used, needing new seals, rebuild, gears and all I dont think $200 is a good price. Keep searching and you shall find. Hell I got a deal on 2 gear driven t/cases one of which was just rebuilt for $50. The deals are out there.

Good luck in the search

I think a complete 84-85 front axle is worth $300 max. The outer locking hubs are worth at least $100 for the pair.

It all boils down to how bad you need it and if you can wait for a better deal to come around.

Why not just keep the diff and re-gear?

I think the price will be dictated by your market and need. If it's rust free and includes everything, I'd go for it.

Keep in mind that the TG axle for $400 referred to above is just for the housing.. and that's a rear housing to boot.

If you are patient and enjoy the hunt, your might be able to save $100 max. My bet is your won't find a complete Toy axle for that low unless you really hunt or are very lucky.

See if he'll take $300 with the diff and try to make up the extra $100 elsewhere with your swap.

By the time you are done... you'll forget what a $100 even means as things start to add up.

Did you do a want ad on this forum? I would do one of those first and see what you can get. Cali has alot more Yotas than the rest of the country. I can find them alot of times for about $200 here.

Ya i did a want ad for one here.

I already have thirds that are regeared for the front and rear, both with limited slips, so I'm set there... He is stuck on $380 for the whole thing because thats what he paid for it... i told him he paid too much. That didn't help :wall:

moot point as you should add a longer truss later but, don't all 85 axles have a factory truss on top? that looks more like my '83 axle....

Nope... factory truss is always under the axle. Different years have different lengths, with '85 being the longest.

Aftermarket trusses mount above.

Solid Axle Swaps have been done for over 10 years now and easily number in the thousands completed, so there are a lot of write-ups of the process on the internet.
Do some web searching and you will find the info that you need very quickly.

Here's a good one to start you off.
