can you swap a lexus 470 axle in a 2nd gen 4runner

I found a lexus 470 in a junk yard with e lockers front and back I can get the whole frame and wiring for 700, I was wondering if i could sawp the axles in my 2nd gen 4runner?

If I cant would the third members fit into my back axle and a 85 front axle?

I have heard that the gear are different in the front because of full time 4wd?

Lastly if I did not want to do a solid axle swap could i sell the axle for more?

thanks,
Chris

If you want more complete answers, search FJ-80 axle swap. the lx-450 is an FJ-80 with fancy interior stuff. Heres some of what i know.

you can swap the axle, but you would need to either go custom suspension, or reweld your stock suspension, or go to leafs.

It is pass drop front and rear, so you can do it, but your rear dline will be at an angle.

The rear will not fit, it is not 8" ring gear, rather 8.875". The front will, it is a reverse cut high pinion 8".

I don't really know what you mean here? if you mean the front gear ratio vs the rear, then no, the diff gears are the same. The full time 4wd means that they have a center differential in the transfer case. You aren't swapping the tcase, so you don't have to worry about it. As for the gear sizes, yes, the rear is bigger than the front.

This is pretty dependent on where you live. Out here, you could sell the 85 axle for around 200 bucks. The elocked stuff, you might as well just sell the diff, you'd get more, since most people want just the high pinion front for trucks and 4runners, they won't want the front axle. The rear you might consider selling whole to a FJ-80 guy, dunno how well those retrofit into non elocked 80's.

I think i read somewhere that the gears i different because of the full time 4wd like in a regular 4x4 there just the back ones bacwards but in the full time 4wd they had to make them different since there on all the time
also thanks for the info

the front is a reverse cut high pinion diff. The ratio has to be the same becasue the tire sizes are the same front to rear. If the ratios were different, then the front tires would spin at a different speed than the rear, and cause huge problems when the center diff lock was engaged.

The front diff can be retrofitted into an 85 front axle.

I'm pretty sure the 470 is ifs. The 450 I know for sure is solid on both ends with optional e-lockers front and rear.

LX470's are for sure IFS and I would say can not be swapped into a 2nd Gen. I think the LX470 was introduced in 1998 (not 100% on the year).

If it's a LX450/FJ80 then it can be swapped but you'll either spend $800.00 to get high steer from OTT so you can run leaf springs or you'll have to set up some kind of link suspension.

I've got a set of FZJ80 axles in my garage that I plan to swap under my 2nd Gen and run 42" tires.

If you don't plan to do some serious wheeling and/or run BIG tires then I'd say you do not need the strength a LX450/FJ80 axle would give you.

Just find a 79-85 mini truck front axle or if you want 3" wider and a 9.5" ring gear find a FJ60/62 axle then buy some 30 spline birfields and axles from Bobby Long and call it done.

yes, though i'm pretty sure it was after 98, cant swear to it though.

I read his post and switched the numbers in my mind: dislexics UNITE!!!!

Anyway, bballchrism, a 470 isn't going to work like i posted, you'll want the 450. Sorry.
