91 runner front 3 link solid axle

This post was started on another site but I wanted to let some other yota guys in on my fun.

So last summer I ran my 33’s and did nothing but break front axles and it really took the fun out of playing with my truck. This year I am going with an 85 solid axle running a high pinion land cruiser third and factory e-locker. Should be much better!

Got the plasma going and voila….pile of useless parts!

Gotta get the rest of the mounts out of the way

Nice clean frame!

Raise the drive line up 2 ½ inches to flatten out my belly.

Clean out the old crossmember to make way for the new one. 2x4x1/4 made from three pieces for easy trans service. Lower links for radius arm will start at the crossmember and run to the front diff. Gonna use coilovers to hold it all up.

Truck looks mean without the ifs junk!

Started getting the axle ready.

Made all the gussets need to weld it all up.

Parts just waiting to go together!

Axle upgrade….. Big Time!

More to come!

so the front shaft doesnt have much flex .

For the work required and the cost involved, it was well worth it.

I have been in the mock up and decision stage.

Looks as if I am going with a three link , with a panhard bar. Should work very nice. I have found that my frame is gonna be to close to my locker when I start to flex so I decided I am going to c-notch the frame. It is going to make the frame stronger at the front and give me the clearance I need. My hope is to keep the truck at a nice ride height and have lots of flex. My coils at this time will restrict me to 2.5 inches of up travel and 5.5 down.

Looks that my caster angle is gonna be just slightly positive which should be just fine.

Have you thought about jigging the front housing to make sure it did not warp from all the welding on it. You do really nice work BTW.

Did you do that or have it done? What exactly did you do?

Looks nice and purty.

First Thank you, and second it took a few hours to weld up, doing 1 to 2 inch passes on opossite sides. Lots of cooling cycles in between. Starting out with the 85 housing already trussed on the bottom makes it a little safer too.

I did the driveshaft myself. It really wasnt all that bad to do.
once its apart the mods are easy. befor and after pics of all the stages.
strip and sandblast

remove the seal and grind off the stop ring

cut the stop off the bottom and remove excess off top of bearing

clearance for the grease fitting

Funny part, I have to cut it now to lengthen it, need about 5 inches so i am just gonna retube it and not change the slip joint. Gonna see how that works.

Sweet going build man. Hopefully we can help each other on this 3 Link, I'm doing one as well. Have you considered going to a 4 link radius arm setup like that found on jeeps?

I did consider going with a radius arm setup, but after cuttin it all out and sitting back for a good look I decided a 3rd link would be better for me. I think with the radius arm set I will be restricted on placement of my coil over.
Plus who does a radius arm "heeps", The YOTA needs to be different.

The upper link is on the crossmember so that the three links will be the same length. Unequal lengths makes for some difficult geometry. Using 2 holes on each mount for adjustability.

Hopefully I will post a few pics tonite.

So got the links and crossmember done.

Third link and coilovers are next. Engine and trans lift into the body went nicely as did the frame.

Was happy with the space and clearance gained for up travel.
Third link gonna fit right up in the frame and clear the oil pan and engine mount thanks to a pair of brackets Stangs fab added to the build.

Thinking a 36 or a 38 tsl for her to ride up on.

all links in and hooked up. Moving on to coil mounts.Flex is real smooth with no binding and it seems that all is gonna clear real well.

Couple more days and the front should be done! Time to link the rear!

Front end is almostc complete. Getting ready for reassy. The spring perches are all done and the frame is finished(on the front anyway).

Front diff is ready for a clean and some fresh parts.

I decide the time was right so , the rear got cut out too. Frame is a little soft on the pass side so I'm gonna have to fix it too.
