88 Toyota pick up
hey guys i am new to the site just joined up. But I am about to enter into my long process of building my 88 Yota into a rock crawler. But as i am beginning to plan wat i want to do to my truck i have been running into some questions that i havent found the exact answers to and thats where i am coming to you guys for advice now.
my question right now is about Hi-pinion. I was wondering how much more drive line clearance i would be getting if i installed the hi pinion in my toyota. I am just seeing if it is going to be worth the extra money to put the hi pinion in over doing the same R&P, and locker set up without the hi-pinion. Any advice on this subject would help me.
Thanks.

are you talking about the high pinion for the front assuming your gonna do a sas? i wouldnt do it in the rear if thats what your asking. if for the front i would definetly recomend it with a SA. worth the money and gives you better pinion ground clearence

sorry bout that... I am already about to begin the SAS. I have a solid axle out of a 84 toyota... But i was just wondering how much extra ground clearance i will be getting for the hi-pinion set up. If anyone knows how much i would gain in the front or how much i would gain in the rear.

again i would not recomend the hipinion in the rear but as far as the front gains would be a few inches i guess. turn your diff over you have know and thats pretty much what you will get. i would recomend it in the front as i believe its also stronger in the front and any ground clearence you can scavange would be worth it IMO. If i were you i would go hipinion front 5.29's and an arb airlocker for the turning ability

thank you. I was already planning on running the 5.29's but i was in a toss up on lockers for the rig.. I kinda want an eletric locker for it not the ARB. But that is a subject i have been tossing around alot lately.
Also another question that i have been kinda debating with myself is which steering would be better to run. I am either thinking bout going with crossover steering, or rack and pinion. So any advice or suggestions on the steering system would be greatly appreciated.

get a high steer for sure from like Marlin or simlar. stronger and less likely to break steering parts over stock style crossover. Another thing you could look at is ram assist steering. Do you have the 22re or 3.0? if you have the 22re look at trail-gear they have a nice completle kit to do that. As far as finding answeres to these questions, look in the Solid axle swap section and do some searches. this site among others have tons of info on the strongest parts and everything youll need to know before you do this swap. and cause ive forgot to mention earlier and i dont want to forget... Welcome

i have the 22re right now but i am planning on switch it out for a 305 v8 w/ fuel injection, also looking to switch out the transmition with either a th350 or the th400. also looking to add a 4.7 transfer case to the stock one for a dual case set up.

well i was going to go with a 305 cuz my buddy has a brand new one that he was going to give to me. But instead i actually came across a vortec V6 from a s-15. I picked up this motor for only $500 so i am bought it.
