The newish ride

Hello Toyota friends,
Allow me to introduce to you my new "child"....

I just bought a 1990 4runner v6 from a nice old man who just didn't have time to deal with the new headgasket problem he was having..... so he sold it to me for a rock bottom price of $300.... not the head gasket... the whole car for $300.

I almost felt bad for basically stealing it from him... but he was just "done" with older cars.

I picked the car up today to take it 2 miles over to my hangar for the HG repair. It started right up, smoked SOLID white smoke for a few minutes (I mean, my buddy was driving behind me in solid IFR conditions...) once it burned that off, the smoke was gone, and the truck ran great.

As we approached the airport (about 1.5 miles into the drive) the car was up to temperature. It started doing this strange thing with the idle. I stopped at a light and the rpms were alternating between 500,1000,500,1000,500,1000.... when I hit the gas, it ran fine. Let off the gas, back to the 500,1000,500,1000. Once I started driving it was fine.

We got to the airport, pulled it into the hangar, shut it down, went to dinner. 2 hours later, fired it back up to further diagnose the problem. once the car warmed up it started doing it again. Before it was warmed up, it ran and idled fine. So we did a few more tests. I put the car into neutral, and took my foot off the break.. the rpms were now at 2000,3000,2000,3000,2000,3000... I added some gas, and it was back to normal.

The HG gets started on monday.... once the supercub is done getting it's annual. I'm debating doing the water pump and timing belt while I'm in there, but we'll see.

It's a 1990 3VZE 4x4, 238,000 miles. Body is in pretty darn good shape, no rust at all. Interior is in remarkable shape for the year. All the windows work, but the passenger door won't open with the inside handle.

Ok guys, I have a few photos that I took real quick with the iphone.

I'm going to do a whole build thread here soon, I'm just getting all the parts together.

Here's the plan....

1) Fix head gasket.
2) while I'm in there, I'm thinking about doing the valves.... but we'll see
3) Lift and tires.... all I want is 33's.
4) Bumpers go bye bye, swap them out with something that can kill a moose.
5) Interior needs some work... looking to go vinyl on the floors.
6) Paint
I'm sure there will be more....... but that's a start for the next month or so.. before the snow gets too deep. Thankfully this is not my Daily Driver.... just the "It's too deep for the STI" kind of driver

Here are some before shots

Your idle problem sounds like EGR modulator:

Yes, I bought all 3 of them from people that were "done with old cars" 2 of them are out in the valley waiting to be towed in to town when I'm done with the blue one. All of them are manual... no auto trannies are allowed in my driveway.

Got some work done on the runner today.... I got the interior stripped, carpet out, carpet cleaned, and am working on "sprucing up" the interior.

Here are some before and during photos of the carpet cleaning, my buddy Andrew was replacing the CV joint on his runner, so I helped him with that so he would help me on this carpet.

Seriously I want to find the person that owned this car before me and ask them what the **** they did to it... I mean, we cleaned out jelly beans, gummie bears, condoms, $10.19 in change, 12 crayons, 2 packs of un-chewed gum, at least 8 pieces of chewed gum, at least a full pound of dirt, probably some dead hooker blood (might have been vomit), a few dead animals (mice), and enough fries to fill a McDonald's Jumbo size fry box.

Here are the photos...

The vacuumed and sprayed down before shot.....

Wash cycle

The action shot

I'll have some "after shots" when it dries
