Hey everyone,
I've been following this site for the last few months, and have now finally created an account. I'm just getting into the 4x4 world. I acquired my 1986 4x4 pickup about 3 months ago. Aside from replacing the worn out shocks and upgrading the tires, the truck is pretty much stock. I'm still in school, so I can't afford a major build-up. My next project, however, will likely be to get some sliders on it. The body of the truck isn't in the best shape. I've done some rattle can repainting on some areas, but it's far from pretty. It's engine, on the other hand, is great. It has barely over 100k on it. Here's a pic of when I got it ![]() and here's what it looks like right now ![]() Like I mentioned, I'm just barely getting into 4 wheeling. So any advice regarding anything would be appreciated!

Welcome. That truck looks sweet.
My only advise is search first then ask questions. Some people might give you a hard time about that because theres so much good info here. But most people will help you anyway.

In some areas I used some bondo. But now I've noticed that the paint has started flaking off of those areas. I'm guessing that either I didn't sand the bondo well or didn't mix it right. any tips? On the driver side fender I tried the Duplicolor clear coat. It's been about 1-2 months since I put it on. It has its pros and cons. Pros: its definitely harder than the paint alone and thus doesn't scratch as easily. Cons: it creates a somewhat rough surface which then traps dust easily. So my front fender always looks dirtier than the rest of the truck. Overall I'm pleased with the way the parts I painted turned out. I used Duplicolor simply because it's what the local auto store carried. I've heard better things about Rustoleum products. If I do any more painting myself, I'll probably go with Rustoleum so I can compare the two. The truck is far from show room quality, but looks a heck of a lot better than it did before. I'm not sure how long rattle can paint holds up. If it doesn't hold up well, I'll probably take it to Earl Scheib for a cheap job, but I'll do the prep work myself. anyways, here are a couple more pics. ![]() ![]()

clearcoating can be such a PITA if you don't get it to go on and dry just right you get that orange peel problem...
