New Guy with a (new) Old 4Runner

Hey All-
Figured I'd better introduce myself now that I've been spending some time lurking around.

I recently acquired a 1985 Toyota 4-Runner. Its a gem indeed: Solid Axles and EFI. I picked it up from a friend of the family who has had it since it was a year old. Right now, it has about 242k on the clock, but she's still running strong. Overall price: $1,000.00 (ya, ya, I know, I'm a lucky SOB).

This is not the first Yota I have owned. Prior to going to school I had an '82 Pickup that I purchased for $75 with a blown engine and I rebuilt and got running. Through a set of unfortunate events (it was stolen right after getting it running), I never got to take it off roading more than a couple of times, but since then I have always wanted another early Yota with a 22R/RE.

I have a fair amount of experience working on these engines as well. A friend of mine who's a mechanic swears by them, so over the years he and I have rebuilt 15 or 20 22RE's (he currently owns 6 himself, including a Turbo 4-Runner ).

Anywho, that's my introduction, I will try and snap some pictures tomorrow and post them up here.

Ya guys, where's the love?

But seriously, work has been nuts... today was the first day I have worked less than 11 hours in a day... and this weekend will be my first day off in about 2 months. I will snap some pictures tomorrow morning and post them up.

So, its been a long time coming, but I eventually got some pictures snapped. The Yota is sitting in the garage as I start to tear it down. It needed a new head gasket and possibly a timing cover, so while I'm at it, I'm doing a full tear down and rebuild of the engine. The transmission appears to need some work as well, so I will probably pull it as well during the process.

Now, onto the pictures...

Front Right of Vehicle: There is a little damage on the front right... from an accident by the previous owner about 18 years ago... I'm sure she'll have lots more of these soon enough.

The Engine Compartment: The radiator has already been removed. I will spend he next couple of days disconnecting and marking the vacuum hoses and wiring.

The Cockpit: Its a little dirty, and it needs some work... but its got all the handy dandy guages of the mid 1980's.

Rear Seats: The previous owners had 5 kids, and at one point, this was their primary vehicle, so they installed an additional 2 seats facing backwards. These are nicely bolted in and plenty safe, but for my uses, this will most likely be going away.

So, there she is for now... she will hopefully look much better in the next month or so.

Considering its over 20 years, almost all original, and served as the spare vehicle for a family of 5 (all of which drive at this point), its in very good condition. Hopefully it will only get better with all the upgrades I will be doing to it.

Got the radiator off to the repair shop today. Sadly, we are having a patio poured tomorrow and we were not warned it would be tomorrow (we were told sometime in the next week or so), so tonight I made no progress on the Toyota. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more part removals.
