New 4runner owner in South Florida

I just sold my 1990 Miata project. Once it was complete, I needed to move on. Wife works for Toyota distributor, so I decided to get a Toyota. Looked at MK III Supra's but I did not like the electrical complexity and most were poorly maintained. Wanted a 79-82 pickup, but any in Florida are trashed. I kind of settled for the 4runner, because for the same basic vehicle, the 4runners were far cheaper than the same year pickup. Around here, the pickups command a premium and they are shipped out of the country to the Caribbean and S America.

I found a 1989 4runner with the R22 and a 5 speed, the only drivetrain I would consider. It has 119K, runs well and has no rust holes. It is black w/ grey interior. 31x10.50x15 Michelin LTX on old American Racing wheels. Honda EX front seats. So far I have: replaced a busted vent window, cleaned inside and outside, replaced the shifter bushing and lower boot, installed SR5 cluster and inclinometer. Next is getting the drivetrain checked out, making sure all bearings and seals are in good condition. Then check out the engine, making sure the timing guides are OK and doing a complete tune-up, valve adjust, etc. Last will be new paint. The fiberglass top is very weathered with glass strands loose. There are a few minor dents to fix and then I have to choose a color. I really don't want to stay black, since it shows every bit of dirt. I may go with bright orange with black wheels and black trim.

I have scored needed parts here and on Ebay. So far everyone has been honest and helpful. Cheers!

Congrats on getting your runner.

Good luck in restoring her!
