need of some direction!

So I am just going to come out and say it. I am a complete newbie when it comes to most knowledge about mechanics and 4x4. I have always been very interested in learning how to work on engines and everything else that comes along with them but, no one to teach. I have a 94 Toyota 4 runner (22re) I blew the rod in 3 months back and attempted to do an engine swap with a budy who supposedly is a “mechanic” and ended up stuck, out of money with a blown rear main seal, cracked head gasket, and vacuum hoses that are all out of configuration. I guess live and learn. I am just going to be taking it to a mechanic to get the rest of the work done this week. But The one good thing that came out of the deal was with the rebuilt engine I put in the 94 I received an 89 automatic 4 runner, runs a 22re also. From what I can tell it is stock and is complete other then it being engineless. I desperately want to get into the wheeling world. Not that I am going to be able to pore a ton of money into it all at one time but,l I do want to start getting the basics. I am primarily going to use it for mud, trails and hopefully some crawling.

*What are your thoughts on the engine I should put in?
*I know I want to stay with the 22re but are there any upgrades I can do to it to get some more power?
*Also, what is your opinion on were I go from there, what would be the next steps be that are going to give me the most bang for my buck on overall off-road upgrades?

I would appreciate all the tips and insight I could get.

where to start...

Engines: check out DOAracing.com, LCEngineering.com for complete engines. ENGNBLDR.com for performance heads. I bought a rebuilt short block form checker auto parts and the head from ENGNBLDR.

Power upgrades usually stay with exhaust and intake, heads and cam. After that it gets very expensive.

Where you go from there is up to you. Most follow the protection, lockers, lift and tires method.
