From Jeep to Yota

I just traded my 1988 YJ with a 350 and Dana 44's for this

1985 toyota pickup (obviously). Bear with me because I'm new to yota stuff and some numbers he threw at me.

Rear 63" chevy springs with an extension leaf ? Another leaf is attached to the frame and one end can unbolt for 10" more flexability.

35" swampers, full sound system.

I'm in love with it. Did I do ok for a first yota ? Turn key ready truck that is street worthy.

Oh 4.88 gears and probably alot more im forgetting.

Open front and rear, I'll take pics on my lunch of the spring setup and interior.

he has full doors for it, so I dont have to freeze all winter

Thanks guys, I'm glad I made a good choice for a yota !

Now here is another question, Jeeps and stock axles ...... the dana35 is a time bomb if you go above 31" tires...

What about yota ? I believe these are stock and are running 35" with a reverse offset wheel.

stock brifields (front axle) are fine with a 35s as long as its open.. lock the front, be ready to replace the birfs. when you do replce them get Longfields... they will then be unbrakeable.

the rear axles are fine locked or open up to i'd say 38s. anything bigger might want to think about upgrading the rears as well.

birfs are birfields. they are the axle shafts. longs are longfields, they are super strong and if you ever do manage to break one, you have a lifetime warranty. when you lock the front you can either wait to break and replace w/ longs or go ahead and save you the headache and buy them now. But ARB air lockers are a fine choice, with or without the sound haha

Very good to know, thank you.

I'm used to things snapping and breaking on jeeps. It's why I threw in some dana 44's when I swapped in the chevy 350 and 4 speed.

psst psst haha

I need to find a group to wheel with.

Only people I know are off meetup.com

NW Off-road enthusiasts. They go every 2 weeks almost. But it would be good to find a second group also.

Lookin good, but do your self a favor and take the smitty built bumper and side steps off and get a good set of sliders and just leave the rear bumper off...

I'll take a look at the rear bumper and see if there is any obstructions.

I don't tow stuff anymore so I won't need it.

Might get me some cash off craigslist then if I put them both up there.

What do you think the bumper and nerf bars would go for ?

Well the rear bumper is welded on, the nerf bars un-bolt. but the trails around here, i'm tall enough to miss all those obstructions.

so i'm gonna let the trail tell me what I need. If the nerf bars smash, i'll put rocker guards on

A funny thing has happened to me in less than 24 hours also.

I've had cars slow down (on my way back from purchasing the toyota) and when I went to fill up this morning. People give me thumbs up and wave.

That's more attention than my v8 jeep had, and jeep people are suppose to wave all the time !

Ya, I'd keep them till they break. I think they'll add a little protection for now. not a lot but some.

I need some recommendations on Mirrors.

That's the only law im breaking currently.

Is there any style I should look for? I'm going to hit the junkyard and look for black ones.

Hit up a pick-n-pull. I think that's your best option.

Any reason you ditched the Jeep? Just curious.

Needed a top (300-3000) used soft top and hardware to brand new hard top.

doors (150-1200) tube doors, half doors to full steel doors

flywheel (200) and 4-6 hours to change.

Some other random odds and ends. front driveline, lifted so it can flex. transfer case shifter, fabbed up.

Wife just started school for dentistry and im starting in 6 months for Mechanical Engineering. So no time + no money = no jeep
