Hello Everyone

My Name is Ryan and I am originally from Auburn, Washington but moved to Tempe, Arizona 3 years ago. I have owned a 88 2WD Pick Up (sold), a 89 4Runner SR5 (sold), and just pick up a 86 SR5 4Runner with a 4" lift, 4:88 gears and lockers. Just thought I would say Hi since I just joined not too long ago.

Yes I am a huge Toyota fan, just like my dad was as I was growing up watching him wrench on his old Toyota Pick ups. I am here to hopefully learn a few things and need to know where to post up questions I have how to maintain the 4runner. I need to change out the drivers side rear wheel cylinder that has been leaking break fluid. I also need to know what the loud ping is in the rear end I hear about once or twice a day when turning? I assume the locker is either making the axle spline jump teeth or something with the locker its self. I am really worried about it and have no idea where to start looking.

If your truck has a locker, thats pretty normal.

Post up in the tech section under the year of your 4rnr and no doubt someone will help. 'Cougmeister makes a good point, though.

I guess I do not understand the mechanics of what is normal about something in the rear binding up and making a loud ping. I can even feel the truck break loose when it does this in sharp turns. So if it is normal, what would cause this, what are the mechanics behind this in the locker?

I'm not really the one to ask. I don't have lockers, never had them, nor know much about them. I do know that can be a symptom. DC knows more that I, though. As well, if you don't get any satisfactory answers here or in your thread in the tech section, PM "ZUK". He is an authority.

Lockers are designed to keep your axles locked together at all times. Some, like the detroit and the lockright, are designed to unlock when going around corners so your tires don't get trashed. The result is a lood ping or clunk when this happens.

If its really bad and happens really often, including straight line driving, you have a bad locker. I had that problem with my Lockright, and it was becuase they springs were worn out and the locker casing had broken.

It will do this with any non-selectable locker, though detroits are the best and wont happen as much. The absolute BEST lockers to get are the ARB air lockers so you can unlock them (effectively giving you an open rear end for street driving) or, if you don't care about tires, you can install a spool.

Well I would never weld the rear LOL. However this is very helpful and I had already posted a thread prior to this stuff so thank you everyone. I now have a better idea of what is going on here. Thanks again.
