What:

Dante's Descent or The Devils Hole - The sinkhole is a circular vertical cavern with an opening measuring approximately 60 x 80 feet x 380' deep!

To get to the railroad tunnel we'll travel a portion of the Beale Road: http://www.southwestexplorations.com/bealehist.htm

The old main line railroad tunnel is a trip back to the steam era of railroading. Partially collapsed to keep vehicle traffic out, it still has the guard posts from WWII on top, and after a short walk we can view graffiti from the hobo era - stuff like "The Chago Kid was here"

Where:

West and East of Ask Fork, AZ.

When:

April 12th, 2008

Meeting time/point:

Meet and greet @ 09:00 AM , Depart @ 09:30 AM

The SafeWay parking lot in Chino Valley, AZ.
1031 N. Hwy 89
Chino Valley, AZ. 86323

Comms:

2M FWD 2 - 146.46, Repeater 147.22+, PL 162.2, CB 8, FRS 1.1

This will be a full day trip, pack a lunch and come on up!

Mark

Yes it is - I'll be scouting the upper section this weekend to see if the ranch gates are open, but I doubt if 4x4 will be required. I'll post up the details after Sunday's ride.

Unfortunately the access to the Beale Camel Road is locked or crosses posted private property. I did scout out a route that gets as close to the area as possible, and it also takes us back to the old railroad tunnel.
