Yeah; oil leaks, problems, why is he selling it?, clean title?, does everything work?, etc.
It sounds like a great price!

Here's his answers.
1. How many miles are on the body & engine? 253k 2. Any recent work done, such as clutch, head gasket, engine rebuild? Slave cyl & ac line 3. Any oil leaks? Burning half qt oil a month. 4. Has a recent compression test been done? If so records? No So what do you guys think? Last edited by Saiba Samurai; 09-13-2009 at 07:08 AM. |

Make sure you test the rear window...1st gen 4runner tailgates are notorious for having window motor/switch issues.
Take a floor jack, rags, flashlight, lug wrench. wiggle the driveshafts, twist the hubs in /out of lock, try the 4wd (not on pavement) If the shift lever is sloppy it is more than likely the shifter seat bushing, about $25 in parts and 10 minutes to fix. you can get a compression tester for $20'ish. Good luck. My 1st Toyota was an '86 4Runner I bought with 1500 miles on it in March of '86

I can't complain it's really a good looking truck for the years. It's a good truck for me to learn wrenching on. Now I just need someone local to me that loves these things enough to come hang out with me and help me get a game plan together!
BTW, on these 22RE motors what's their top speed, good shift points, etc? The reason I ask is I'm fine with shifting by the sound of the engine, but it's hard for me to know my lines. I was driving her home on the highway (70mph) speed limit and I don't think I could go much faster than that, and uphill I'd hold 65.) I've read elsewhere these things can cruise at 80mph pretty easily, so that's my first thing to look into. Also this has no RPM gauge, so I am probably shifting earlier than I need to sometimes, which is good on gas, but when I'm doing on-ramps I worry about putting it into the redline. I drive an Evo X Turbo as my daily and it's a bit different.
