Should I buy it? 86 4runner

1st time poster, long time looker. I am looking at a 1986 4runner, all stock, no rust, new paint. Sorry no pics.

22re, 5speed, 168k, runs and drives great.

Know seller personally and he is having rig gone through completely for any and all issues. Only thing to have been done on engine was timing chain.

Interior is great (porno red?) vinyl seats , no carpet, just wash and go. Also no a/c ever installed.

Picture if you will (in your mind) this all stock, no rust rig with orig. engine and tell me if you would pay $3k.

color is burgandy with black top

I would only pay that as long as I know it was taken care of. You say you know the chap and that it has been so have at it and give us pic's when you get it.

Option #2 is a 1999 PreRunner xcab FSBO asking $5500 that I know nothing about.

179k on the clock with timing and wp recently done. Dad is selling for son who is overseas.

I would get the 4x4. When the owner told you that the timing chain was the only thing done to the engine, just make sure that it's had all it's scheduled maintenace performed. It better be tip top for $3K.

I worked as a service writer for years and I can't tell you how many times people would say, "What do mean it's gonna be $2000, I've had this car for 12 years and never had to do anything to it." Then I always said, well if you went 12 years w/o maintaining it, that explains why your bill is so expensive now!

I'm biased. Has less miles than my '86 did at purchase. Look at what you want to do though. a ton of people are selling built rigs right now and if you want a wheeler you can get a turn key for a fraction of the price you can build one for.

There must be some sort of reason that every person with a 1st gen says get the 86. The only minus to the whole thing for me would be the "porno red" interior. Pretty funny. But all it takes is one donor rig with a gray interior and that thing is sweet and you will never want to get rid of it. The only reason I am on my 3rd-1st gen 4Runner......

88 3.0 5 speed- stolen
87 22re auto- gutless, same mpg's as the 3.0
87 22re 5 speed- awesome, 23 mpg, never getting rid of it.

So I guess my vote would be GET THE 86!!!!!!!

Red face

i think it is a tad expensive .

For that much money I would have to know the brakes are all most new front and rear with all the brake hoses looking just as well .

Tires no less than 80% tread left .

I also could not live without the AC maybe you live where you have no use for it.

I also have bought vehicles from people that claimed to take good care of them

Other than the price I love this generation of Toyota

I keep think the price is fine, because I paid 3300 for mine. But then I remember that mine already had a 4" lift, BFG mts on some aftermarket 15s, arb bumper w/ warn winch, and aisin man. hubs...

I would still get the 1st gen. lol

In my opinion, the 22re is a bulletproof engine, and a second gen toyota is a bulletproof vehicle, for $3,000 you cant go wrong, and if something does go wrong, you know where your friend sleeps at night...

Where are you located, that makes a difference? But for a stripped down 4Runner it's a little high. If it were an SR5 then it's easier to pay that number. How are the tires and what size are they? The first thing you'll want to do is upgrade the tires and maybe wheels if they are the stock 235's and that will cost a quick $500-1000 depending on what size you want.
