Question about a Purchase

Hello everyone, I'm a first post newbie here so if I should have read something first 'my apologies" are forthcoming.

Now onto my reason for posting. I have a 1986 4runner with a 22re 5 speed in it. I've had it for 15+ years and my son is about to be sixteen and he wants it.

So I have found another 4runner to buy for myself.

It is an 89 v6 auto.

I can buzz around and repair my 86 almost in the dark on a trail without a flashlight! Almost!!!!!

Yet I have never been around nor do I have any experience with another 4runner of any kind.

So I'm asking is a v6 auto that runs but had minor vacuum leaks and an exhaust leak with 255000 on it worth wasting my time on?

I know all about the durability of the 22rec but hows the v6 in 89 models?
Hows the auto tranny? what gears came factory with the 89 v6 auto's?

The truck is totally straight, never wrecked, little off-roading in its life....(used in oklahoma snowy weather..ie not very often lol)

It's been a commuter truck for work up and down the interstate.

I can get it for a super low price so I'm just wanting to know if this may be a great thing or a money pit?

Thanks for any and all replies!

The 89 with an automatic transmission most likely came with 4.30 gears, however I believe this was the first year that you could get the optional 4.56 gears if it came stock from the factory with 31's, but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I won't start the whole 22re versus 3.0 debate, especially since I've only owned 2.4's and 3.4's, but I have heard that the 3.0's are harder to work on than the 2.4's (i.e. just takes a little more time to do things). But again, never worked on one, so take that for what it's worth. I guess to answer your question of is it worth it, I'd have to know just how "good of a deal" you're getting.

The 3.0 V6 paired with the auto is going to be slow, the 3.0's are also notorious for head gasket issues .... the 3.0 and auto is, in my opinion, the worst combo offered in the 84-89 4Runners

90 runnerred...... the deal is I can buy this 4runner as is for 200 bucks. At that price the aspect of parting it out and recouping my money is an acceptable reason to buy it. However I would really like to keep it and use it while my son takes over my "baby"!!!!!

Well that's kinda my original thought...but then I began to ponder just how much more/less dependable it may be than my 86. I absolutely love my 86 and my son and I have drove it all over the country on trails everywhere. He wants it I want him to have it, Yet I want one myself, so this came up and I thought I'd get it then the whole..money pit or steal question busted in my mind so I thought I'd get some more knowledgeable opinions on the v6/auto combination since I've never been around one.

money pit?
but for 200, swap in a 22re and a manual tranny with new shaft and bam,
or buy your son the 89 and let it be his "little project" so he can learn how to work on it
