Possible 85 pickup purchase

So this guy at work that i talk Yota with is telling me he wants to sell his 85 22r 5speed pickup because it needs more bodywork that he can afford right now. Drivers side floor is rusted out and other minor sections but that it still drives fine and the motor still pulls good at 220,000 miles. Says its lifted with 4 shocks out back and 4 shocks up front and from what he describes its running 12-15 inch wide tires so im assuming their at least 35's. He doesnt really know because he bought it that way and for some insane ass reason hasnt bothered to read the tire size. I would assume its regeared and doubt that its locked but How can i check for these things while doing a quick inspection of the truck? He says he paid $2,000 for it. On friday i will drive over and check it out. What should i look out for? And i will post all the info i get on it and maybe some pics. Any ideas on what i should offer this guy? He also says he has some mickey thompson 16" wheels for it.

The old 8 shock special. I'd be checking over the frame with a fine tooth comb, but other than that, sounds like a decent rig.

Haha, most likely what someone rigged on it. It's kind of seen as a "ricey" mod since it actually does no good at all.

Thats what i was thinking.. Duals?? Seems liek a BS mod to me..I remember looking through a thread that posted a pic of one guy that had chromed out the whole drivetrain and he had like 8 shocks on the rear.. That wasnt ricey anymore..he stepped into the soy sauce arena..

If you pay that guy $2000 for that I will personally drive where ever you are and shoot you. If you plan to wheel it, I would guess you will pretty much redo everything that he or the previous owners have done. That means the lift blocks, and 8 shocks are gone and useless to you. If the body has rusted floors.. I'd be pretty skeptical of buying it. Check the frame over, bring a hammer and hit along the frame and see if any areas are bad. Next, I'd drive it and see how it drives and listen to the motor then. You will find out if its geared then, too. Next.. pop the hood, check the oil to see if its burning oil (dirty dip stick) and check the head gasket for leeks.

Depending on what tires it has, I wouldn't pay more than $800 for something that's got 220K without a rebuild.

Honestly, with something as rusted as you said and with such high miles.. I'd keep looking.. even if you get a IFS truck and do an SAS on it.. 85s are now over rated due to the number of simple SAS kits around. That way you have a stronger, more desirable frame, IFS powersteering, and hopefully something with lower miles/better shape.
