New truck- was it a good deal???

Greetings, just joined the forums today in light of buying a new truck.

It's an 86 toyota 4spd long bed 2wd with 140,000 on the body. The mechanic I'm buying it from said he installed a 94 22RE a few weeks ago that has 110,000 on it. It started right up cold, and drove well on the highway. The body's in good shape as far as I can tell. And I'm paying $850 for it.

Just wondering what some of you think of the purchase and possibly any recommendations on simple things to do and check out before driving it across the country. (OR-NY)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm, sounds like a GREAT deal to me. I'm a bit jealous actually. I can't say I know anything about the 22RE but just make sure the check engine light isn't on and be sure all you vitals (brakes, steering etc..) are 100%. I'm assuming you won't have to worry about rust too much, but you might want to clean it up a bit and throw some Fluid Film on it or something. Take some pictures and show us your new ride!

The best thing to do is just go over it from top to bottom, give it a complete tune up including changing the fuel filter, check the u-joints, brakes, and anything else that you can think of.

Will do. I am picking it up tomorrow and actually bartering for it (my old TIG welder) so no cash out of my pocket I also ordered a copy of Chilton's off Amazon, as I'm hoping that owning this truck will enable me to learn more about auto mechanics.

Your definatly getting it for a good price, and these trucks are fairly easy to work on, and if you have any questions just ask, someone here will know the answer.

Nice find! First, give it a real looking over. forget chiltons or any of those crap third party manuals, get the factory service manuals. You can get the book if you're like me, or you can actually find all of that information on yotatech here. Look for links for the online FSM's. Check for good colored fluilds - green (or red, depending) coolant and clean oil. Pack extra fluids for the trip. Post pics! Lots and lots of pics! use something like photobucket.com to load the images so they don't have the funny little thumbnails like the upload feature uses (see some of my first posts with those annoying image thumbnails in the build thread in my signature ). Welcome to Yotatech!

There was someone else looking into a pickup in here a couple weeks ago. We all wrote up some good info to think about when buying a used truck.

But I cant find that post....
