The V6 before 1996 is the 3.0 and I would not recommend getting it. It is under powered for a V6, your 2.7 had more power. It also is not to great on gas. It is known for blowing head gaskets and Toyota had a recall on the head gasket. 1996+ had the 3.4 which is a good engine.
If you want power and pre tacoma you are looking at a engine swap, the 2.7, 3.4, and lexus 4.0 (1uzfe) is pretty common. If you decide on a engine swap I would look at the lexus 4.0. It is a V8, has great power, lasts along time, gets good mileage, weighs in around your old 2.7 due to the aluminum block and it is common in junk yards for cheap.
