Looking to trade up my 92 for this....

Hi all! I'm new here... Just bought a 1992 4Runner (5 spd), with many woes... And more now that I've brought it to my mechanic. I knew it had problems, but he's found a few more.

Anyways, the short story is that I am really wanting to trade up to a 3rd gen 4Runner. Here is the exact one that I'm interested in: Click here

Just wanted some advice from those who know better than me.... Anything I should look out for? Should I just stick it out with my old 4Runner?

Here's a list of what's wrong on the oldie:
  • Tailgate window regulator (already ordered the part)
  • Major rust along bottom of all doors, chrome bumpers are rusted through (but someone has quoted me $320 to fix it all, and paint the bumpers black instead of rechroming)
  • Super notchy shifting into 1st (sporadic), some notchiness in 2nd & 3rd -- does this mean I need a new clutch?
  • Spare tire holder seems to be missing... Probably rusted out and the previous owner removed it.
  • Cracked dash-- not a big deal to me, though
  • Exhaust is making a bit of noise, I think there's a hole or loose clamp somewhere.
So, what do you think?

I dont think you'll get a trade straight up for a 3rd gen with the condition of your 2nd gen... especially a 5 speed 3rd gen. I have a 92 4runner, of course it doesn't have the problems yours does, but none the less, it has its own personality/problems and I love it to death

Your 4runner problems are not that bad....

The trans could be bad fluid, or a worn shifter seat and socket (under $20 from marlincrawler)

the exaust could be anything, crawl under the truck and start pokin around...

Sorry, I guess my title was confusing.... Not a straight trade, but probably I'll have to kick in $2500 or so.

I do love the look of my 1992.... Much more than the 3rd genners. But I guess I'm nervous that there are more problems ahead, also this newer 4Runner has some conveniences the 1992 doesn't have (a/c, cruise).

Well, I'm going to take a look at it tonight and we'll see what happens. Thanks for the input!

Well the 1997 4Runner was a total bust... The car was in horrible shape, the guy was deceptive about the mileage (closer to 400km, not 300), super disappointing.

As for my 1992, I do love it, I want to keep it, but everyone is being so discouraging to me about it... Including my mechanic! I figure, if a guy who gets paid to fix cars recommends to me that I shouldn't fix my car, I should probably trust him. He said that the ball joints are going, shocks need to be replaced and there are holes in the frame and body. That's just what it would take to get it to pass a safety so that I could sell it.

Maybe I should start a new thread and see if people think my truck is worth saving....

Save it! people ask me, including mechanics, all the time why i still have my truck after 11 years. I now know it inside and out after a motor tranny suspension and other stuff. Almost every person that i've talked to that parted with their toyota has missed it and regrets getting rid of it. I haven't had a mechanic touch my truck in years. Just my 2cents save it!
