if you are looking for 22REs, try craigslist. i found mine there. generally they are in fair condition post 1991, but you will always find your rust buckets.
i am no omniscient force when it comes to engines, but from what i can guess, the 22RE is newer than the 22R, or at least an improvement. Its a little 2.6L, steep hills at slow speeds smoke it, and driving on the highway, sometimes getting to 65mph is a battle when the guy behind you wants to floor it..... but its die-hard and i love it, my truck hasnt let me down yet. good luck finding a truck man. |

Would a 22r with a header and a bigger carb really be noticeably more doggish than a 22re?

I have had both, they are a bit slow especially with oversized tires and/or re-gearing but they are very comparable to competitors of the same year. Just remember a 20+ year old engine design is not gonna be comparable to modern engines HP but are simpler and easier to work on than modern engines. |

If you have a choice defineitely get the 22re over the 22r. Itll be considerably more powerful and should get a LOT better gas mileage. Plus itll run at angles and you wont have to deal with adjusting a carb all the time. I havent had any real problems with the 3.0 in my 4wd though and it definitely kicks the piss out a 22re power wise. For me price dictated getting a 3.0.
