Help me in my "need a truck" dilemma

So I wrecked my truck earlier this month, and have been driving my mom's tacoma ever since.

I'm thinking that she will be wanting it back soon after she gets home from a cruise next week.

I've been looking for an 86-95 truck, 4x4 22re to pretty much no avail.

I found an 89 in riverside and went and looked at it. He said the engine had been rebuilt 3k ago, but had no reciepts. Motor made a bad ticking noise, had no cat, and was fairly gutless. Granted, my truck was a 3.0 so maybe the 22re's just really seem a lot less powerful to me. I dunno.

I can find trucks with 22r motors all day long. I can find 3vze's all day long.

My wrecked truck was a 3.0, and it had never given me any real problems with 254k on it. It ran strong, and as far as I know had never been rebuilt or had the headgasket recall done.

I guess my question is this:

Is there a real disadvantage to the 22r compared to the 22re?

Think I can get lucky with another 3.0?

if you are looking for 22REs, try craigslist. i found mine there. generally they are in fair condition post 1991, but you will always find your rust buckets.

i am no omniscient force when it comes to engines, but from what i can guess, the 22RE is newer than the 22R, or at least an improvement. Its a little 2.6L, steep hills at slow speeds smoke it, and driving on the highway, sometimes getting to 65mph is a battle when the guy behind you wants to floor it..... but its die-hard and i love it, my truck hasnt let me down yet.

good luck finding a truck man.

Would a 22r with a header and a bigger carb really be noticeably more doggish than a 22re?

2.4L and the 22R and 22R-E were sold side by side from 83-90, pretty much the same engines one carb one EFI with only minor differences within the same years, the EFI has around 16 more HP and about 2 more MPG most comparable years (22R=96HP 22RE=112HP).

I have had both, they are a bit slow especially with oversized tires and/or re-gearing but they are very comparable to competitors of the same year.

Just remember a 20+ year old engine design is not gonna be comparable to modern engines HP but are simpler and easier to work on than modern engines.

If you have a choice defineitely get the 22re over the 22r. Itll be considerably more powerful and should get a LOT better gas mileage. Plus itll run at angles and you wont have to deal with adjusting a carb all the time. I havent had any real problems with the 3.0 in my 4wd though and it definitely kicks the piss out a 22re power wise. For me price dictated getting a 3.0.
