Deal or No Deal???

While going to a new import junkyard today..i came across a 1992 Toyota 4runner v6 5spd.

THE GOOD: it has a 4in lift, 33" BFG muds (only 2 are almost brand new, 1 is about 40%, and 1 at about 20%)

has 162,000miles on it

IMACULATE on the inside and outside except for a dent in the pass. front fender

THE BAD: it has a knock in the lower end and the tie-rod is off of the pitman arm for some reason????

PRICE: $1250 as is

im thinking get it now, let it sit while i save up the funds to do a 3.4 swap
let me know what you guys think!!! i want to JUMP ON THIS DEAL RIGHT NOW!!! before it slips out of my hands

price is a little high but looks like a good candidate for a future build...

going behind parent's back, where you gonna keep it? just somethings to consider...

the going behind my parents back part was about the money..lol

i got an offer a few days ago for $3500 for my '86 pickup..

if i do get the runner then i will replace the money($1250 or whatever i buy it for) in my savings account with the money that i get for the '86

my grandparents ok'd it for me to take the money out of my savings account..as long as my father says its ok..which might not happen lol...

the money WILL get put back into my savings account if i get it though

"son, why do you NEED that truck, when your's runs perfectly well?"

"but Dad, I WAAAAAAANT it sooooooooo much!"

"No, son."

"but dad, this guy doesn't know that with a few weekends i could probably double it's value"

"OK son, do they have two?"

This predicted conversation brought to you by my imagining how I would have to argue the point.

The whole upsetting part is that you said you were going to sell your '86 .

BAHAHAHAHA LMAO that's exactly how it'll go probably..

only he doesnt like toyota AT ALL..lol

yes selling the '86 will be very tragic..but i wont sell it for months as i will need something to drive while i deal with the motor problem on the 4runner

what would be the BEST thing to do if you were in my shoes!?!? go through the 3.0 and replace whats screwed up and drive it and build up funds to do a 3.4 swap?
or just let it sit around and build up funds for a 3.4 swap from the get go

if i replace whats screwed up in the 3.0 and sell my '86..then i will get some of the money from the '86 in my pocket (most will go to dad) then i will be able to build up funds for it as i drive it (will have to have 4.88's for gas mileage reasons lol)

im thinking FOR NOW..pull the motor turn the crank inspect cylinder walls and replace the bearings and whatever else needs replaced and call it good until i can swap it out! i could even swap the tires and put my 31" xterrains on there to keep some better gas mileage

my dad and i are bascially full blown mechanics now..we've had to rebuild and replace like 5 motors in a year LOL, and we have a friend who is a certified mechanic and will work for us for next to nothing

i know everybody is gonna say 3.4 swap NOW!!!, but i dont have the funds to do that, but i would be able to go through and replace some of the 3.0 stuff (might take a few months but who cares) and drive it like that until i get my money saved up for a 3.4 swap!!

it has 162,500 miles on it, and i've seen alot of these motors with over 200,000(some been well taken care of, some been HORRIBLY taken care of) so i expect to reach 200,000 without any more MAJOR problems

you aren't really going to know until you start into it......but you already know there's a problem. as long as the block is good, you have a solid foundation to build on.

my advice,
1)get it 1st. sounds like you have work to do to make that a reality
2)sounds like you have to pull the engine either way. make your decision at that point.
3)3.4 swap seems very popular here, not sure i would personally ever contemplate it based on expense and labor involved
4)a fresh 3.0 rebuild by experienced people like you sounds good. i would assume you would have to do the same to the 3.4 before you called it good anyway.

Baby steps young Jedi.

nope its a trail-master lift (see the big sticker on the side )

still haven't been able to talk to my dad..him and our mechanic are workin on my dad's diesel jetta!

first thing would be to disassemble the motor (out of the truck of course)

tape and mark all of the vacuum hoses and wires and plugs (before we pull the motor out)

then go from there...could have to have new heads and crank and all kinds of crap..or it might just need the crank turned and new bearings and rods

he's actually starting to like it..and its CHEAP..i think he'll go for it..but only time will tell
and i need to get on it FAST because it might not last very long..its a texas truck so almost NO rust on it at all..and the interior is AMAZINGLY IMACULATE...and the seats are COMFORTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! holy crap makes my mom's civic seats feel like

if he says yes..it should be at my house tomorrow evening!

cool about being upfront with your folks...I remember those days
I think there are still 5 or 6 V-Dubs in the lower parts of my parent's property...

Congrats on getting the go ahead. I know a 3.4 would be the ultimate route to go but you might get a smoking deal on a 3.0...nobody wants them and easiest thing to get it going...
