Exclamation buying a 4runner, what do you think?

found a 1987 4runner online and went and checked it out today. I need some feedback from you guys whether its a good deal or not. The guy wants 2k for it, no rust, never wrecked, newly COMPLETELY rebuilt engine, new clutch, SR5, 149,000 miles, 22re, 5speed, automatic locking hubs, sunroof, power windows, rear window works, 30x10.5 tires, red paint with bronze/gold decal. these are the problems:

seats have normal wear, only 2 holes in driver side
windsheild needs replacing
needs new tires
horn doesnt work
no radio
rust on the actual sunroof
driver window doesnt work
crack in the exhaust right after the manifold
vaccuum leak for power brakes (just needs the hose, you can see where the hole is)
and the intake is duct taped

so what do you guys think? deal or no deal? 2k is all i have. thanks in advance

I'd buy it.... if you can afford to fix the stuff down the road and the guy has the receipt for the engine.

about the going rate for one in the PNW...start out at $1500, that way you might get lucky and have a couple of hundred to find parts with . new windshield is gonna be $150'ish

in case you need it you can down load a factory service manual using the link in my sig.

good luck and welcome to YT

Thats all pretty simple problems, but it will end up bein a couple hundo to fix everything. Ask if he has paperwork for the rebuild, and offer $1500. But even at $2000 it sounds like a good deal

Welcome to Yotatech!!!

I'd get it, all that stuff is easy to fix...as long as you have the money. Some of that stuff you can fix down the road too. Definately, see some reciepts for the motor. Try a low bid and see what happens if he doesn't take shop around.

he doesnt have any of the paperwork for the rebuild, but he did take off the head and he says it looks brand new. he seems like a pretty trusting guy and i know he knows his stuff about cars. it turns out he owns a 1968 shelby cobra gt500 convertable. one of 12 made. thats only part of his collection.

Nice find. Without documentation on the motor $1500 seems fair.

yeah, he didnt do the rebuild. he got it in oregon right after the rebuild and then parked it with the rest of his cars. that was 4 or 5 years ago. He is thinking about giving me some tire with it. they are 31x10.5's, but there are 2 different kinds of tires.

Also, the car has never been in an accident. all of the panels still have the VIN's on them, and i used a bondo meter and that test came up all good. and only has one dent on the drivers side front fender. no rust anywhere. sorry, i keep remembering stuff randomly. is there anything else i should look out for?

If this is your immediate primary vehicle and you won't have time to work on it, I'd pass, even at $1700-ish.

If you have another vehicle for DD or will have time to work on it (and handle any surprises), then it's a good deal.

Anything that has been sitting for several years is going to have oddball fun things pop up.
