87 Truck-Time to sell, need advice.

I think it might finally be time to sell my first vehicle. I don't really want to, but my free storage location is going away and my wife wants to get rid of it. I need to find out what it is worth in its present condition and whether I should put some money into it before selling it.

It is an 87 standard cab with a 22R (not RE) engine. I think it has around 175k miles. I got it in high school in 1994 and drove it all through college. In 2002, it lost a gear and I decided it was time for a new vehicle (a Sequoia). The truck sat at my stepdad's house for 4 years before he got tired of looking at it. He had the tranny fixed (at my expense) and I drove it (limping) to my brother's house where it's been until now.

The last time it was started was 3 years ago and it needed some engine work. It had very little power and was very rough. I'm not too engine savvy, but I suspected it was a carb. issue. Also, for the last year or two that it was a daily driver, it was burning some oil, I think.

While it's just been sitting, some issues with the clear coat have come up. It is peeling off in several places. It didn't have any body rust issues before going into storage. The areas where the clear coat was peeling seemed ok, but the protective layer of dirt made it difficult to know for sure. The dirt was also hiding the hail dings it has (Fort Worth locals might remember the May 5th, 1995 hailstorm that caused 'em).

Here are a couple of pics. I didn't have the means to clean it off at the time and I left the key at home, so I couldn't open it up.

What do y'all think it is worth, in it's present shape? Would getting the engine fixed before selling it be worthwhile?

I know there is a market for it. A number of people have come to my brothers door, unsolicited, wanting to know if it was for sale.

In case anyone wants to know, it is still in Fort Worth, Tx.
Thanks,
Jeff

In this part of the country right now if it was inspected and in driving condition your looking at $ 1000 plus . Then again it all has to do with the money people have to spend at this time.

Depending on other factors in Texas I would think the frame and body would have a whole lot less rust then up here.
