The only thing that would make that rig better would be a 6speed

With Dodges reputation regarding autos, you'll kick yourself later.

I hate my Auto in my '99 dodge. Already been through 2 torque converters and a front pump (thank god for warranties)

Mines got the 48LE... much better than the earlier ones... The older ones had a REAL bad tranny... if you left it in park running, it wouldnt run the pump and fry the tranny... (from what I've heard) The tranny was improved in 04 with the 48LE for the new HO motor. If I have any problems it will most likely be with the torque converter... I've got an 8/80K warranty on it which will cover any problems I might have... after that, as soon as it gives me problems I'm pullin it and having a sweet tranny built by these guys: http://www.goerend.com/standardduty.php

I leave mine in park all the time, since I have a turbo timer. I cannot put the truck in neutral and pull the key out, so I have to go to park while the turbo timer runs.

Fantastic trucks, will take a beating. The only thing i worn you about now is the fuel pump. We had big issues with those in our units. We had 5 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins turbo, and all 5 fuel pumps had to be replaced. Same issue with our 03 burbans, except that even the news ones crapped out the new dodge ones did not.

ya I know about the lift pumps... I'm going to replace it later with an 05 or newer.. if it fails, it will at least fail open and the CP3 injection pump will still pull from the tank and let ya get home.

Peter, more than it should have been... I coulda got one a CRAPLOAD cheaper, but not near as nice, as low of mileage, as well appointed, as well loaded, certified used with a Dealer 8/80K warranty... Take whatever you can get one for around now and add 5K... I did do a lot of shopping around and none of them were as "tight" and sound as this one... I figure it was worth what I paid in piece of mind.

I also drove a bunch of other ones, and you could tell the difference in the transmissions... I figure they had pulled something, I dont think this thing has ever pulled anything in its life...

I see, there are still a lot of "gas prices/gas mileage" trade-ins around here. Just the other day, I poked around an 01 dodge 1-ton for $9K and a 99 Ford 3/4Ton for $6k.

Edit: If either one were a manual, I might looked at it a bit more.

Peter... thats not too bad.. Ford definately run cheaper, but get a 7.3... DONT TOUCH A 6.0L. IF you really are thinkin about getting one, go for an 03+ dodge, 05+ if you can bag it... but stay away from the 08+ with the 6.7L. or any duramax... but get the allison..

Phyl, no plans at the moment... if I do anything it will be a programmer to tune it down a bit for better mileage... Then if need be bump it back up to stock to pull. Also need a hideaway gooseneck hitch and some decent walled floor mats. Also going to put some black nerf bars and possibly a bull bar on it to help get in the sucker and mount some KCs on it.

Peter, I wouldnt have minded gettin a duramax, but I wanted 4 full doors and didnt want a super long truck... the dodge is 140" WB which was the same as the taco, the shortest 4dr duramax is 153"... too long for my tastes.. If I was just using to pull, i wouldnt have minded but in and out of walmart and things like that, long trucks drive me nuts.

Im not in a position where I need to tow. My 4runner is still streetable (mostly) and if I get to the point where I want to tow, I'll just strip it down to a formula toy or the likes so its light enough to pull behind the FZJ or a used Tundra.

BTW: Whats the plan with your 4runner (or whats left?)

Welcome to the club! I knew you were just delaying the inevitable with all those other vehicles

I see you scored a Laramie 'H' package with the manual shift transfer case. Well worth losing the heated seats for, I hate electronic t-cases.

I laugh at all the "I can't afford to own a diesel truck because of gas prices" excuses everytime I fill up. Last 2 tanks were 21.0 and 19.5 mpg, mostly city driving. Not bad when I consider my 4Runner gets 23mpg despite weighing 3000+ lbs less and having 1/5 the torque and 1/3 the horsepower.

And for those worried about it being an auto.... Cory and I had several therapy sessions where he went over the pros/cons of each to figure out which was best. Being on my 3rd Dodge truck and having driven a pair of d-maxes for extended periods of time, it was a debate I was very familiar with.

Let me know if you're in need of a Yota transfer case, solid front axle, 22R motor, or rear axleshafts. I promise all proceeds will be directed back into the local 4x4 economy (Ok... Marlin may get some of the money) .

Thanks Hans... will do. And yes, several "therapy" sessions later.... I'm still glad I got the auto. Now, how do you tell if its got a limited slip/locker or whatever dodge uses?

The info sticker under the hood will tell you the gear ratio and open or limited slip.

You can also call the dealer with the VIN and they can tell you.
