Help I'm stupid

I have an 85 4runner with a 22re. I'm an idiot and pulled my distibutor out without marking anything now I need to find out how to put it back in (the right way) so that my engine will actually fire. Can someone help me out here and give my some directions on how to put my distributor back in so that it's in the right timing and will actually fire. Thanks!

Anthony

You have to get the #1 cylinder to top dead centre, on the compression stroke. The tdc mark on the crank pulley will line up with the timing mark, and both valves will be closed. It's easy to accidently get tdc on the exhaust stroke, which is not good. Then replace the distributor so the rotor is pointing to #1 terminal. Some have a mark for #1, some don't, but you'll see it lined up with where the #1 on the cap is.
On some distributors the shaft turns when installing it so you have to allow for that, and start with the rotor pointing to one side of #1. I've never worked on a 22RE so I don't know how much, if any it will turn. You just have to use trial and error.
After it's installed set the timing correctly.
