let me upgrade you. 4Runner to FJ
recently gave up on hooking my 4runner up as it seemed to me like a money pit was brewing. also recently came into some money so now my options have been narrowed down to xterra and FJ. test drove xterra last night and tonight is the FJs night. i was wondering if there is anything i'm going to need to look out for on the test drive. also i read on here about windsheilds cracking easily? is the Atrac and Locker thing fixed that they can be run together without any hacks/mods? how are the stock wheels/tire set up offroad? any recommended options i'll want? Thanks for the help guys as i'm really leaning towards the FJ espicially since its the only newer SUV that wont look every other SUV on the road

FJ's are Way more capable off road than the Xterra.
Interior's are around the same on the older Xterra's now they are arguably a little nicer but the FJ is more comfortable. If I'm remembering correctly the FJ has more power and the option of a 6speed manual - Xterra doesn't. Lifts and aftermarket for FJ is HUGE compared to the Xterra.
Howver the Xterra owns the FJ in room for kids, and hauling stuff in general. Xterra will get dirty inside easier as it has Carpet;-)
As with all new SUV's, the stock tires are aimed for OnRoad performance and quiet ride, if your serious about getting in the woods, you will need better tires no matter which one you go with...

ya i'm definately going for the 6 spd manny. i may put my 31 in destination a/t's on as they are brand new on my 98 4runner as of december. i have no need to haul anything i cant fit on the roof. i snowboard and bike so the rack will fit nicely

A trac and locker now work in unison when in 4low.
Have had my FJ since July of '06, and had the windshield replaced once.
However a month back I got a chip from a rock going home from work, and I had it fixed the next day so it would not spread.
FJs are great rigs, just lacking some of the back seat room as noted above.
If you do not haul passengers, take the rear seats out, lots of room then.

test drove FJ last night and am completely sold on the thing. blindspots were not an issue as i typically drive with my mirrors also has the back up sensor. the FJ i looked at is an 07 in the black cherry color has rr diff lock and atrac for about 24 995 but i think the dealer is going to work with me a little bit. hoping to own a cruiser by mid june.
