How to increase FJ steering response?

I know FJ was built more toward off-road use than 4Runner, but the steering is often too slow on-road where mine spends 90%+ of its miles.

I'm thinking of doing a 4R rack and pinion swap if it'll speed up response. After the first snow of the season, a few 'Runners usually wind up in the junkyard so parts shouldn't be a problem.

For comparison:

FJ Cruiser Rack & Pinion

- Type Power-assisted variable gear rack-and-pinion
- Overall Ratio 17.1:1
- Turns (lock to lock) 3.0 turns
- Turning Circle Diameter (curb to curb) 41.8 ft.

4Runner Rack & Pinion

- Type Power-assisted and variable gear rack-and-pinion
- Overall Ratio 15.6:1
- Turns (lock to lock) 3.04 turns
- Turning Circle Diameter (curb to curb) 37.4 ft.

I haven't taken any fitment measurements, but think it'll be a direct swap given the similarity in suspensions.

Am I overlooking an easier fix while sticking with the same wheels and tires? Any links to writeups? TIA...

On my runner(3rd gen), I got the total chaos urethane bushing kit for my rack. It has helped quite a bit.

I dont think TC makes a kit for the FJ, but it would be worth looking into.

bushings and maybe look at getting a stiffer steering dampner. i recommend 4Way Tough Dog Dampener from Australia. i know on my 2nd gen 4R i got a much quicker response when i changed my dampner.

The FJ won't have a steering dampner, since its rack and pinion steering.

Completely different setup from the 2nd gen draglink setup

That's what I was thinking, but can't find my FSM CD right now. Thanks, Dr. Toyota.
