FJ & mpg

I'm finally a proud FJ owner, at least a year after I saw it for the 1st time at a local dealer.

I can't say enough how stoked I was driving it home. Now something I should have considered more prior to my purchase was the fuel economy, I can't say I'm happy about going through a tank (premium) while doing a little over 300 miles mainly highway.

Having said that, are there any ways to improve my mpg?

It will get better with about 5K on the engine.
My automatic with the roof rack started out at close to 21 MPG.

Threw some mud tires on stock size as the garbage tires, and it went down to around 19, more rolling resistance.

Put on an ARB bumper, 2" OME lift, winch, and it went down to 18 to 19.

Put one some mud tires sized at 285x70x17, and right now I get between 16.5 and 18 for city/freeway.

I did not buy it for the gas mileage though.
Also my commute is 14.5 miles each way, so that is not to bad.
I fill up every Friday morning before work, and I have around 1/4 tank left still.

I've been keeping track of my mileage and trying to see if there is a difference between fuel stations (I have an excel sheet if anyone wants to see it) but I've noticed that my mileage dived to about 17mpg and I'm only getting some 240mi on a tank (mostly city traffic and about 13mi to work). Can't say I'm happy about this but it may be dirty fuel. I added an ethanol cleaner to it and we'll see if it helps as I usually only buy 87 oct. Mine is nearly stock with the key difference being an ARB rack and not the OEM one. I've got about 7100 miles on it. Cheers

Nothing wrong with a 3.0. Have owned two myself. Not bashing them at all. I was only relating to the 3.0's MPG vs the FJC. My FJC is like a Honda compared to the old 4Runner I have, and my Honda is, well its a Honda. Fill it up every 3 weeks.

87 octane in an FJ? :-O I only mentioned it once and was scolded....so i never did it, though it would be nice to save a few bux on filling up....$60 a week is a lot, especially since I go up and down steep hills a lot and avg around 7-10mpg during the work week.....i make about 18mpg on the highway though....Planning a trip to FL at the end of Feb, so i can kiss about $600 goodbye round trip... :-/

Once the rings seat it wll get a little better. It's sad though when everyone talks about how much more effiecient fuel inj is, but I haven't seen a company make one yet that gets as good of mileage as some carbs do. I understand it's more about emisions, but my carbed truck passes better than any of my fuel inj do.

If it don't knock or ping, go with the lowest octane you can. Car dealers and manufactures are in with gas companies to sell you the most dollar possible. To my knowledge from gas chems I know, the only difference is the octane, not any other cleaners or additives.

I have ran the lowest grade and the cheapest gas I can since new.

17,xxx miles and runs like a top. No pinging.

I do have a sore left cheek though from my wallet getting thicker...

I do run high test when I wheel though...I dunno why...I just do.
