Spark Knock?

My '95 3.4L 5 speed has a pinging spark knock when i accelerate quickly. I have tried using premium fuel with octane booster even and that seems to help but it is still there. So my first question is what octane gas does everyone else put in theirs? Mine seems to run like crap on regular 85. Also how do i solve my spark knock problem? Do i just adjust the timing perhaps?
Thanks,

Nick

Really you can't adjust the timing? That seems quite odd.

are you sure there is no egr valve? every auto parts website i've visited sells egr valves for the 5vz-fe.

"Another difference between early California and 49 state 3.4 engines is the EGR system. California has it and other states may not. I bought my 3.4 engine in Oregon and it does not have the EGR system. I believe Toyota got rid of it in later Tacomas and 4Runners, just not sure what year."

I guess only some have it.
