how do i replace bearings on axles with ABS ?

i believe they get cut off and you'll need new ones pressed on.

They can be pressed off and reused. Just don't hurt them.

the speed sensor ring on the axle has a retainer of some sourt on the inner side toward the diff. and it's what seals the inner oil seal. If i cut off the speed ring will the retainer ring be loose? the axle is really small inside the oil seal and does not seal it.
I went to my local NAPA machine shop and they said they dont do toyota axles because of the weak backing plates theres no way they can press them with out being destroyed. Then i brought it to a garage who said he was gonna bang it on the ground to pop them out but i think he'd run into the same problem i am and would like to charge me for 100 hrs of labor... or destroy my axles in a press would the dealer do this if i brought the axles to them? with my parts? i took some pics just to show you what im talking about the axles housing is huge and the oil seal sits in farther than a regular axle. so i need to keep the speed sensor retainer to seal the oil seal. With out and then with the oil seal placed in it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm not sure if I understand your question or if I can answer it but this is what I think.
I have done the slam the axle end on a hard but giving surface to get the bearings off before and it worked fine. I THINK that that retaining ring just marks the location where you would stop pressing the tone ring onto the axle. Maybe insurance that it doesn't work its way onto the smaller part of the shaft and spin loosely? Anyways I don't believe you need that reatining ring if you don't put the tone ring back on. Someone else should chime in that has your model truck and did it before. I'd like to hear their answer too. I'm not sure without actually being there seeing it up close.

I think that if i leave both off oil will be touching the bearing and might seap into the drum? i'm not exactly sure how it works exactly. this is my 1st time doing a rear bearing. With non ABS axles when you slide the axle into the housing is the oil seal tight around the axle or does it seat on the bearings retainer? thanks for reading all this. it just sucks theres no write ups about replacing bearings with ABS axles to read haha thanks for you help man. |
