Does anyone know how much having the truck in 4 high kills you gas millage? It's winter in Colorado and I find myself driving in 4 high quite often so I just wanted to know how much it's costing me. By the way its a '95 xtra cab with the 3.4L.

quite a bit. in 2wd my truck gets about 17 around town. in 4x4, ive filled up, gone offroadin in mud in 4lo, and was almost empty 2 hours later.

If you are running in 4 hi, it shouldn't be more than a few mpg, but realistically, snow+4hi+lo speed= less mileage.

I got 19 running between Moscow and seattle in the winter-- about 60% 4hi, 40% 2hi.

I never calculated it, but a whole offroading trip (the whole day) I went in with a full tank and wasted maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of it. Almost all of it in 4hi too.

Well last night I did a 5hr snow trip, engine was off maybe 20 minutes to help a fellow yota owner with a wet distributor on the trail. Overall mileage was around 60 miles i guess.. hard to say, i go by hours when im in the hills.

I started with a smidge under half tank.. and got home w/ a smidge above E.

I average 20-21 mpg highway/town.. 22R.

You cant honestly calculate mpg when your wheeln or on a snow trip. It's impossible. It's a terrible way to figure out a rate of burning gas. I figure I'm burning no more gas than normal. The motor has only one efficiency. Just figure if your putting more resistance on the motor the more gas it will burn.

Yes i am talking about just basic around town driving on the icy roads here in denver. Four wheeling would be a different story.

I'm in Colorado too with the same truck. In the summer I can get 325 miles from a tank on the highway. In the winter, I usually get 300 miles to a tank. (I always get the best mileage on hwy285 from Buena Vista to Denver). I just guage the type of mileage I'm getting off the 1/2 and "E" mark based on 300 miles I expect before the light goes on. I watched the mileage closely on my last trip using 4 Hi for a chunk of it. I didn't notice a huge variation in the mileage I got. My mileage always craters above 70 miles per hour no matter what I do. I may get crappier mileage because of a big rack frame that goes up and over topper.
What kind of normal mileage do you get?

As for the city streets in snow, I usually misbehave on the gas pedal anyway, so that's not a fair comparison.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of millage i'm getting i'm guessing its around 18-20 like everyone else. I am also prone to misbehaving on slick roads which is no good for the gas millage but what the hell its good for the soul right. I recently put a small amount of gas in the tank when it was just about empty and left it in 4 high the entire time until i ran it out. i was expecting to get about 80 miles on the gas i put in and only got to 68 so it does make a noticeable difference but not a huge one.
