2JDave's 97' T100 2JZ-GTE swap.

Hey everyone,

Quick intro: I have 455,000 miles on my T100 that I use for work/everyday driving, always loading the bed with heavy loads and occasionally towing 2K lbs. In a nut shell I've finally had enough of the under powered performance and have been contemplating moving into a new truck, unfortunately I can't justify the cost of new trucks these days, especially considering the amount of time and money I have put into the upkeep of the T100 it is like a new truck based on how it drives.

With that said I have decided the best of both worlds is to keep the truck I love and make more power by doing a 2JZ swap.

Current specs:
97' T100 Extended Cab - 455,000 miles
3.4L V6 w/ TRD supercharger & long tube headers
Automatic
4WD
TRD baja style wheels
Everything else is stock

Brief overview of planned conversion:
2JZ-GTE VVT-I from Aristo (will do AEM ECU, single turbo, etc.)
Full custom exhaust
T100 Automatic trans to T100 Manual trans conversion (R150F with R154 bell housing) swap
OEM ABS system add-on for AEM integrated traction control function

Tried fitting with rear oil sump first, doesn't fit with the stock front diff in the way.

Installed the front oil sump and clears everything except for the steering dampener. Thinking of setting up some brackets and lowering it on both connecting ends.

More pictures and details to come!

Moderators, just realized there is a engine swap sub-forum... could you please move this thread to that forum?

I believe it would go under /engine swap talk/all other toyota swaps/

Thanks!

Looks like a cool build. I bet even the 5 speed swap would have made you happy, I drove an auto t100 and it still did not pull like my manual even with 366k on the clock. And you should have the 4.30 gears instead of the 4.10 the manuals came with.

Cant wait a it to see this one finished.

Kind of wondering why you didn't go for a 4.0L 1UZ swap? Cost wise, it generally is cheaper to get a whole LS/GS400 car and it puts similar power in stock form or slightly more for the vvti GS version. Besides that, the v8 will have a better bottom end for low end grunt that you'd probably like in a work truck. My dad's T100 is getting a non-vvti 1uz down the road. Nothing against the 2jz at all, it is an amazing engine too, just most people trying to travel in a 1/4 mile the fastest generally grab them up which drives costs up.

Either way, subbing to the thread to watch how it progresses.

Thanks for the input guys.

Reason for the 2JZ is that my brother is helping me with this swap and he knows these motors inside and out, along with tuning AEM stand alone for them. I've always wanted to do a project like this (potentially on different vehicles) and decided my T100 is the perfect opportunity for the experience. I'm also a big fan of the 2JZ after seeing all of the capabilities the engine has (not only for 1/4 mile) and its simplicity... plus always wanted a turbo powered vehicle.

I got the Aristo 2jz-gte vvti from japan for $1,800.00 with 70K miles on it.

Finalized positioning of everything and will be creating motor mounts this weekend. Then onto rebuilding the engine.

Going to be some fab work for the rad support in order to push the aftermarket radiator w/ electric fans and shroud forward to clear the engine pulleys.

Going to use the 2jz alternator/steering pump and ac... will fabricate custom lines/wiring for all of that.

More pics to come.

Hey jaretstuff,

I haven't had time to post up the write up I want to do with pictures and all but will have it up shortly.

Long story short... I've been running the setup since mid march 2017... have put 10K miles to date and it runs flawlessly. Sometimes I forget that there is a 2J under the hood during daily driving, so smooth with no hiccups.

Started with a 51mm borg warner turbo but quickly realized it was running out of its efficiency range in higher RPMs, intake air temps were climbing very high... swapped out to a 60mm borg warner and it's perfect. Put down 440 whp at 17 psi on a dynojet.

I've been hauling mixed loads in the bed.. most I've done and ever do is 2,000 lbs... it was effortless. Have not towed yet though.

The T100 is completely stock except for this swap. Only customization needed was:
Motor mounts
Cut radiator support and custom mount radiator, AC condenser
AC lines
Re-locate battery to passenger fender
Electrical, AEM integration etc
Coolant plumbing
Power steering plumbing & addition of cooler
Steering dampener bracket added on frame to lower dampener so it doesn't hit oil pan
R154 bell housing to mate 2JZ to R150F.. R154 clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder
I used my original automatic transmission cross member and it positioned the motor in the engine bay perfectly. If you use the manual trans cross member it's going to push the motor too far forward, keep that in mind.

That's it in a nutshell. I'll have more specific details on the whole build once I complete the write up. Stay tuned!

Hey Dave, I’ve got a T100 and my eyes on a 2JZ as well. Might be a rookie question but curious why you chose to swap from auto to manual? Mine is an auto as well and would love it if it would drop in.

Hey guys,

Going to update some things here soon, but in case anyone knows of anyone interested.. i'm going to put my T100 up for sale with the entire setup or as a rolling chassis needing only a new 2jz and ecu drop in to make it run. Stay tuned.

good stuff man. I did a 2j swap to my t100 as well. I did a vvti with Driftmotion's 62/65 watercooled turbo. Made 470 to the rear wheels.
