I accidently tried tried to jump my r99 4runner with the cables on backwards. :pat:. So I opened up the fuse box under the engine bay and sure enough the big 120a fuse is blown. I tried pulling it out but the contacts stayed in place and ended up with just the plastic housing. It appears there may be a screw holding it in but I can't figure out how to get to it. lil help here guys please.

I'm not 100% sure but I think those big ones screw in from underneath, you have to remove the entire top of the fuse box.

as far as i can tell its a molded single piece of plastitic

Eric's got it... You have to pull the box apart.

Maybe unbolt it from the fender and look underneath. You probably should disconnect the battery first.

whats the trick to getting this thing apart? I have unbolted it from the fender but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get this thing apart to replace the 120a fuse ??

Just has a closer look at mine, and i can't see how it comes apart. Sorry I'm not much help.

things thing is turning out to be a royal PITA. I'm sure its going to end up being something totally simple that I'm overlooking too.

There's a screw on the side of the fuse box, in the front and the back. One each for the two big fuses. But, to get to it, you have to separate the halves of the fuse box. Leave it bolted to the fender, and take the box apart.

what a pain in the ass. There are 4 tiny recessed clips randomly placed throughout the box. These have to all be undone at the same time with a very small screwdriver. Then you need 2 pairs of pliers to pull up on both ends at the same time. Once its out there are 2 bolts. One 8mm and one 6mm you'll need a socket with a small extension to get to. After that its cake.


At least I can says it's done now.

Yeup... it's a pain.

I screwed up once and blew the fuse... I broke the plastic top away and shorted together the two leads inside. I drove that way long enough that I'd forgotten I'd done it... many months.

I didn't mention that before because it was very much the wrong thing to do and it was important that you did it right versus taking a shortcut that could have fried your truck.

I almost didn't disconnect the batt when I started.

But then I remembered that I was the dumb ลลลล that put the cables on backwards in the first place. Odd's are I'd fry something else if I didn't idiot proof the job and disconnect it.

Wow, couldn't find this detail any where on the web. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Changing this 120A fuse is a PITA. The engineer who designed that fuse box should be shot. Thanks for the info.
