Hella Hell, wiring help...?

Hey everyone, Scuba here.
I tried searching, read like a bunch of thread, to no avail.
I got my lights all wired and mounted to the best of my ability.
Only thing is, im having trouble getting them both to come on.
Couple questions.
Call me stupid, but on a switch that looks similar to this, The line would be the on position...Correct ?

Now if thats true, there are 3 prongs going to it, the bottom one, or the one closest to off, should be ground...yay..nae ?

Moving on..I'd like to be able to turn the lights on independent of the factory headlights, thus being said, im tapping into the 12v's from my radio to my amp for the power to the switch...

As for the switch,
If the ground is supposed to be on the bottom, Im having trouble trying to figure out which wire goes where...
Heres a very crude example...

The wire that goes to the relay...should go on top...or in the middle..same question for the one that goes from the radio 12V to the switch.
The other night i got one to come on...cant remember how it was wired, then last night the opposite one would come on...id like them both to come on...I know there are wiring gurus on here, or just people who have done this before, so tell me if im doing something wrong please.
P.S. Im using the switch and relay that came with the lights

Hey scuba, so you finally got the lights huh? And you got them mounted behind the grill??? NICE!

I wired mine up like this, i spliced the two grounds together, and grounded them. Same with the other wires from the lights, i spliced them together and ran them to the switch.

Basically i ran one wire from the battery to the switch, the lights to the switch and then you ground the switch so it will light up when on.

I didn't use the relay, cause i didn't want to have to tap into my headlights. (i didn't know you could bypass that part) So oh well.

Don't get rid of the relay

You can bypass the headlight turn only thing that is refered to in Hella's directions by just getting 12v from somewhere else I used the battery it self.

what about the direction that came with the hellas i thought they where pretty good at telling you where the wires go.

It also sounds like you may be having a grounding problem at the lights because one works then the other. make sure that the metal is very clean that you use for a ground.

To test if the ground is bad- run a wire from the negitive terminal on the battery to the lights ground wire when you flip the switch both should come on if nothing you have another problem

Both the grounds themselves are good, i made sure they were tight, the are hooked up to...the radiator core support, is that not good enough ??
Im thinking of asking kirk if he will take a look and help me figure it out, but i'd like to figure it out on my own and not bother the nice gentleman

I am trying to do this, as stated in original post im taking power from the splice thats between the radio power, and my woofer amp.

As for the wiring diagram that came with it, Its crap, I said f that to hooking it up to my brites, i want them on regardless of if the factory lights are on or not, when the switch is on, the lights come on, when its off they go off...
but WTF ?

They dont say anything on the back of the switch themselves....and on the diagram, im unsure of which direction is up and which is down, on the switch

is there any writing on the back that might indicate which direction is up?

As for that wiring diagram elton, the geen has an inline fuse, so what should it hook too??

and under the bottom hella light...is that my factory headlamp ?
I would rather not have them hooked to that if so, i want to be able to turn the hellas on whether or not the factory lights are on, and that looks like thats what that is doing.

but yeah mike, if you could check that would be kool, thanks man

yea not a problem

is the switch the one that came with the lights?

in either a) the directions or b) the back of switch

there should be a some kind of labeling of what prong on the switch is for what

Will go look at my truck with the relay with the switch you have.

And you don't have to use the headlamp only deal that are in the directions. All you have to do is take the wire that is suppose be used as the power(the one that is suppose to be hook up the the head light) and hook it up to another power source of your choose I used the battery

Here is a diagram I made last time I wired my lights..I tried to make it as simple as possible. This is to wire your lights directly to the battery so you can turn them on whenever you want...

Always use a relay! Not worth burning your truck to the ground...

Oh, reading this over, the green wire doesnt actually go to the relay.
The package came with all the wires in a nice little harness that plug into the relay,
Black to the lights; blue-ground; red to the battery, and yellow to the switch.
So reading all this info, green goes on top to my..radio 12v's that i wanna pull that from correct ?

Well idk what configuration i had with the lights, but i spliced into my 12v from the radio, idk if i was doing something wrong, or just had them wired wrong.

Not going to lie, the switch wiring of jays post contradicts 96reds post.
hmm

I just realized I failed to mention these are hella 500ff's
i dont think there is much of a difference, but idk

yeah, my picture is not colour'd like the hella wires. I never use wiring harneses for aux lights. I make my own... first time I used a hella 500 wiring harness it cought fire.. never again

Your switch will vary, but it should have a sticker on it saying which wires to put on the posts..

That was the best advice anyone gave me...Then giving the wiring diagram a once-over and making sure the lights were grounded well (which they werent)...I got em on.

Ill take some detailed pics tonight with my dads camera after work

Take care
