ok so i tried just using 2 batteries and that looks to be easier. now, how does one go about charging 2 batteries in series with the stock alternator?

Hard to do directly. One option would be a series-parallel switch or relay so you could put the batteries in parallel to charge, then switch them to series mode to power the load. Depending on how long the load needs to run and how big the battery is (Amp-Hour rating), that may work. Or you might be able to rig up some sort of electrically floating battery charger for the 2nd battery (essentially a DC-DC converter). Or add a 28 volt alternator to the engine or make up a motor-generator unit (12V motor driving a 28V alternator) and use that.
