Hi All,

1992 4Runner 5 speed/22RE here.. in process of rebuilding the engine and wanted to take care of some other things while I have room, etc. I have now read entirely too many posts about alternator to battery wiring specifically, and am unsure how to proceed. I know what I would LIKE to do, but am not sure if it will work or what the ramifications are, so I want to run it by the community before proceeding.

The ground components of the "big 3" I have no issue with. There's really more than 3, so here are the grounds I'm focused on replacing/upgrading with:

• Battery - to block (1/0)
• Batttery - to chassis (6 gauge here)
• Head to firewall (6 gauge here)
• Alternator to body (1/0 here if I can)

The positive side is where I'm getting spun out a bit.. my GOAL is to Replace wiring from alt to battery with new clean fresh wire, and plan ahead for an upgraded alternator down the road.

How do I best/easiest do this?

Keep in mind, for now I'm using the stock alternator with no additional power drains, other than maybe some minimal additional off-road lights and the upgraded headlight harness.

To sum up: Install NEW 1/0 alternator + direct to battery +, with an in-line fuse (80 amp for now but future upgrade-able). DITCH the current alternator charge line that terminates in the fuse block, but leave all other connections in place. Also replace the battery + to fuse block 80 amp fuse, again leaving all other wiring in place. Also include a fusible link in the replacement wiring.

Am I understanding this correctly, and will what I'm wanting to do work correctly, without any charging issues, gauge malfunctioning, or anything else weird? I just want it all to work the same as it does now.

If you follow Rad`s advice you should be good to go..

Just Curious why you would want to ground the alternator to the body ??

Just where would you attach the wire to the alternator??

As the alternator grounds through the bracket to the engine .

There's actually an existing driver's side ground running from the driver side fender to the alternator bracket. The previous owner had hacked it up so it was sort of just wire tied in there - I assumed it needs to be there?

No !!

Not needed at all!! Unless for some reason that is where the Main Ground to the Engine Block ended up .

Any one who has hacked a wiring harness that bad should have world wide exposure !!!!

If the bracket is heavy or encapsulating coat of paint, won't hurt a thing having a ground from body to alternator. As long as it doesn't interfere or snag on anything.
