I just bought a used mtx audio thunder 6500d and i plugged everything in once i took my old amp out which was working fine. When i turned the head unit on a red led light came on and when but no music just a loud pop and smoke smelling. This worried me so i took my sub out of the box it was a kicker c 12 rated at 150 watts rms i did have the amp and the head unit turned down alot. and now i cant get my old amp or this one to work the light will come on red but no music i did buy a new sub a kenwood 12 inch rated at 400 rms but i dont want to plug it up until i no for sure i wont mess it up. I have been trying to get the amps either of them to work using an old sub of mine that i no works but is blown I cant get any music out of it i have tested the wires and they have juice I mean is something totally wrong with my audio system or is it something simple. I tried my best to explain my problem but if u have questions i will be glad to answer them as best as i can thank you

is the amp fuseable ??
if so, check those fuses.
And unhook the darn battery cord before you start working with that stuff, assuming you didnt

Please run down your whole system, and the vehicle it's in. Need to know;

Head unit
Wiring Adapter (if used, or if custom)
Amp Unit
Driver (Speakers) setup (2, 4, 4+sub) and location / wiring

I'm assuming you have an aftermarket deck, custom wired to the factory speakers, and using RCA cables to patch to the amp. I'm also assuming the amp has a low-pass filter on it, which you turned on.

What I would do; Make sure I didn't blow anything up. Disconnect the RCA's at the head unit, and try the head unit driving the speakers only. If that does not work, you probably caused damage to the head unit somehow (bad cables or poor hookup perhaps). If the head unit drives the speakers, then use your known good amp (old one) and hook it back up to the deck. Don't plug the sub in yet. Check that the amp turns on (remote-on, blue wire 12V+), and that the speakers are still working. Good? Power down, and hook up the sub again. Retest the system.

If you get it all up and running again, then power down and unplug the battery. Swap out the amp for the new unit. Make sure the low pass filter is turned on. Hook up battery again and retest system. If good, power down and switch out your sub.

I dont know if you have fixed the problem yet or not. But please check your fuses first. Did you wire the whole system yourself or was is done by someone else? Generally there is a main fuse for the positive placed under the hood. There is also a fuse on the amp itself, depending on make and model there may be 2 or 3. The red light on the amp means that the amp has gone into protection mode. It's a default that modern amps have that prevens you from frying the board. Undo your ground and make sure that the area where the ground is .. grounded.. is clean and has no burn marks. Also.. make sure that the positive( Generally Red) , remote (Generally blue, rarely orange), and speaker wires are not grounding themselves out on the amp casing itself. You also should check that the amp is not grounding out on the metal of the truck body.

Do you use a capacitor by chance?

this happened to me as well and like scooper said, check the main fuse under the hood. the one that goes from your power wire on the amp to your battery. i bout a new fuse for like 2 bucks and it was good as new.
