94 22re Cold Start Issue

I looked through the thread and found this same problem listed with a 22r pickup, but no responses listed.

I have a 94 22re 4X4. In cold start I have a dead ignition. I turn the key and just get a click. Not a rapid clicking like a dead battery, just a single click. If I turn the key four or five times it will kick over and start. It runs fine after startup and system seems to be charging properly. Once the motor is warm there is no issue restarting.

A few months back I replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The truck also has a new exhaust system and new O2 sensor, none of which should impact my problem. At first I thought it was the battery since it was a cheap Walmart Everstart that looks like it had been installed about 4 years ago (before I bought the truck). Since the system was charging properly it seemed like a good place to start.

Now I am thinking the clutch start cancel switch, but that does not make sense because that would malfunction cold or warm and the manual override button has no effect. I also thought possibly the started itself, but that makes no sense after thinking about it further. If it was the starter, temperature would have no effect. Also if it the starter and it had a dead spot, turning the key 4 or 5 times would not matter since I am sure the starter isn't bumping.

I have never been the electrical guy as far as cars go so I need some help. Other thoughts are the ignition switch itself, but that does not make a whole lot of sense to me either.

OK, from what I have been able to find it's wither the starter or the starter contacts?? The whole hot/cold thing is just creating a smoke screen in my mind. Every post I could find was about hard starting when cold, not dead ignition. I can't imagine it is too hard to replace on a 22re. It's behind the same access panel as the oil filter, right?

I had the same exact problem like three years ago on my 94 pickup and replaced the battery because it was like six years old. I would get up early and couldn't start it so I had to bump start it cuz luckily I always parked on a hill lol.

One time I pulled over to help a guy that hit some black ice and he went into a ditch; I got out after driving for a half hour and came right back into the truck cuz the tow truck just pulled up and just like that my truck wouldn't start. I was like wtf?! Gave the tow truck guy $40 to jump the truck and bought a alternator that day, kept happening after that, bought a battery, all better

So... Buy a battery I guess
