'85 Clock, Lighter, and Radio - Something fried?

Hi all,

I have a new-to-me '85 4Runner. While driving a few weeks back I plugged my GPS's power cord into the cigarette lighter and the lighter, clock, and radio all died simultaneously.

I figured it was a fuse at the time. I checked all fuses, though, and none are blown (although a couple had corrosion in the box). I have an after market stereo and speakers installed by the previous owner, so I pulled everything out to follow the power wires, but nothing is jumping out at me.

In searching online I haven't found any recurring themes, so I assume this is not a common problem. Can anyone confirm that?

I've looked at wiring diagrams in multiple manuals. To be honest I haven't dealt much with electrical problems, but I looked up some how-to's on reading the diagrams. I guess at this point I need to buy a meter and start digging in - maybe a relay?

Look at the fusible link at the back of the lighter socket. Mine went out about 9 years ago and it looked like a blob of solder that had melted. I just re-soldered the wire back to the plug, eliminating the link. Later I re-powered the lighter with a fused wire straight to the battery.

Would this cause the entire circuit to short rendering the radio and clock inoperable as well?

Thanks in advance for the advice. Your website is really helpful. I used it to troubleshoot a rear window issue and to verify I was checking the correct fuse for this problem.

Don't recall if that happened to mine or not. Might also check/replace the CIG fuse if you did not already do so:

Sometimes a fuse can look OK, but still be blown.
